Effectiveness of .308

My son shot a small doe this year quartering towards him, the bullet ( a 150gn horn @ 2800) went in front sholder & was found under the skin against the rear leg in a good mushroom.
My point is a deer is heel of a lot smaller than a moose, I prefer complete penetration on animals & I don't think you would get it with a 308 on a broadside shot over 150yds max!
My recomend for game larger than deer is a larger gun.

I hunt 30-30 brush ,Lyman peep. In .308 win. field and or power line , open hardwoods, Ruger short action , Gaillard 1-13 twist Heavy barrel, finished @ 26''-.90 , wood stock piller bedded, topped with a 10x bushnell , and data to 800 meters. Its light for a firearm of its Accuracy at these distances with 150-168 gr bullets.
No worries killing deer but you gotta read the wind perfect and know the range , angle of the deer, range is easy to do with a gps and some flaging tape, leave a little hang for a wind check.

Moral of the story , your just selecting your firearms to match that special hunting area.

Or a .270? NO :p
I reiterate my statement that not too many hunters choose a .308 for long range hunting...
As far as PE90SHOOTER'S statement including the venerable .270 in this debate.... well besides being totally obtuse... this type of interjection is juvenile and inflammatory.... :(
ban him.....:p

It's not what you hit them with it's where you hit them. I've bowled over big mulies at 350 yards with 165 grain Sierra Game Kings and had power to spare.

the .308 is getting a little tired at 450
Huh? I killed a southern Alberta Mulie at just shy of 600 yds with a single 168gr bullet. Got another one at about 400 yds with the same load. There is nothing wrong with a good shooting .30 cal for longer range hunting/shooting. The cartridge will do a lot more than most people think it can.

Basically the .308 is more capable than the huge majority of shooters using it.

If you hit a deer at 1000 yards with a .308 it would walk away with a little lead in it and thats about it.
Well it sure is not going to walk very far with a hole poked in its lungs. Terminal energy is not the most important factor in a bullet's ability to kill. Bullet placement and the permanent wound track are the things that count.

So anyone has taken his M305 out for hunting?

Used mine for gophers this year!

Now if anyone cries overkill they probably are right . But from my stand point it's closer to go to the field then to the range. It's good good target practice and the targets are reactive. There isn't anyone for miles and its a downhill shot with sand behind it.

And the look on the farmers face when he sees half a gopher in his pasture is priceless.

Nosler Reloading Manual :

308 Win.165 gr. ballistic tip @ 2800 fps > 500 yd energy of 1346,drop 44.9.in.
270 Win.150 gr. ballistic tip @ 2900 fps > 500 yd energy of 1370,drop 40.9 in.

both from 200 yd . zero and these are average figures. Not much of a difference in my humble opinion.
