I have been researching what optics to mount on my AR. Needless to say that has meant a lot of time on this site. I am leaning toward an Elcan unit, in this case a Spectre DR, for various reasons. First is availability. As much as I like Trijicon, an Elcan is easier to get. From Wolverine for example. Elcans are battle proven. There is a certain patriotic quotient as well seeing how they are used by our troops in Afghanistan. I have seen good reviews here also.

Having said all that I would like your opinions and experiences.

If ELCAN were an american company, canadians would laugh at the price and buy a ACOG.

Somehow by virtue of it being canadian, it makes it sought after.

I'll buy canadian products the day they start comparing in both price and value to the same thing in the United States.

If you want a 1-4x optic that wont lose zero and isnt as expensive as the S&B Shortdot the NightForce 1-4 from TSE is a great optic.

Man, I get so tired of this same comment. The Specter DR does not lose zero. When it comes to the Specter DR, the critics always seem to be people who have never used it. They read some obscure report on some website about loss of zero; they are confusing problems with the Elcan C79 with the Specter DR. The elevation adjustment on the DR has a locking mechanism. It won't lose zero. It is not the same as the NF 1-4. With the Elcan an easy and effortless flick of a lever switches from 1x to 4x instantaneously. It is not the same as the time and effort it takes to turn the magnification dial on say a NF 1-4 or Leupold CQ/T 1-3. For three gun matches the scope is magnificent. I also know there are people here on CGN who have had tremendous success using the DR in service rifle. Anyone who says they are junk, inaccurate, or unreliable likely has never owned one and likely never even handled one.

Ignore the nay-sayers. Best scope ever for your black rifle. You will love it.

And, if it is good enough for US SOCOM, I am sure it will stand up to the intense rigours of the Canadian rifle range, and I am sure it can bounce around a bit in the bed of your pick-up truck without spontaneously combusting. In fact, it just might even be good enough for Petawawa!

The Specter DR is not your Daddy's Elcan.

Do a search on Lightfighter.net and you can find a multitude of posts/topics by SOCOM guys issued the Specter that are not pleased with it's performance.

TSE had the Trigicon TR24 now

TSE has the Trigicon TR24 now if you are looking for a 1-4x optic.

Best 1x I have looked through. Could use some more aiming points on the recticle for shooting at distance but the triangle post at 1x is really something for CQB stuff.

Gotta say I have never been happy with my experience with Elcans... Got to play with a SpecterDR in Virginia.. heard a ton of bad reviews of the ARMS system as well as some problems with losing paralax... probly not a huge deal when your at the range... but a combat optic I wouldnt use one

Not even considering the scope, but how can you like the ARMs mounts? My ARMs got lose on my Reflex which is alot lighter than the Spectre. Why is it that some optics companies insist on tying their products to such #### integrated mounts.

Have they been issued other scopes on which to base a comparative assessment?

They have the choice of the best the world has to offer, the Specter did not measure up to expectations, however the latest Gen has supposedly fixed the return to zero problems the occur when switching magnification. My unit has just completed a trial on this model, the results are not exactly sterling.

The one i used was just fine, the optic is very clear, and for those whom say it weighs too much!! Hit the gym!

here is a Spectre review from a soldier who is using it in Iraq! From the very tip of the pointy end so to speak.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=18&t=454478

He may be in Iraq but unless he stripped down his rifle for the review he is FAR from the pointy end. Notice no IR laser/illum, not even an old PEQ2A...no white light either. With a setup like his it is unlikely he leaves the wire often, if ever.

So I am thinking of buying a wheeled vehicle for use where I live. Any suggestions?

So what is the rifle going to be used for? and how much cash do you want to drop?
Those two questions could be most important.

I bought a C79 Elcan to train with because that is what the Army makes me use.
I am lending my brother a rifle for service rifle so I am putting a 3-12x50 Burris XTR on it.

A tool for the job.
