Elcan scope

I've only ever fired 150 rounds (live rounds anyway) through an Elcan when I was sixteen and doing my reserve BMQ/SQ at Meaford. Second week of BMQ my Elcan fell off. I rejoined the reserves only a couple months ago, and talking to my corporals in the mess one of the things I most wanted to ask about was weapon mods during field exercises, specifically replacing optics as I have no intention of going overseas with an Elcan if I do get to overseas, and I want to train with what I'll be using. Sadly, I won't be able to switch optics, but I'm nontheless investing in a BUIS for when my Elcan falls of again (also happened to a friend of mine who did her BMQ via the co-op program, only it was in the field and the Elcan was never found). I'm working on getting an AR, 16 inch midlength, so far only have a stock and grip but when I get it and learn to shoot good with irons I was going to get an Eotech, but after reading KevBs and others' posts about it I've settled on an Aimpoint, and later upgrading to an ACOG with the Aimpoint likely to go on another rifle.

Seyek, get an Eotech as they are already in the system and may be easier to get away with swapping it out.

Be sure to engrave your name in it or something to avoid the sticky fingers. Never leave it on your rifle unattended.

That's a very good point, I'm holding off on optics and AR for a while until after I buy a Type 97 anyways, I'll have plenty of time to talk to my section commander and 2IC about possibly using an Eotech. Thanks for the suggestion.

Seyek, I would worry about using what you're given for now. Should you go on tour then you will have a better idea of what is acceptable during work-up. 90% of you proficiency with a weapon is up to you, and how many rounds you have put down range. I find that I learn something every time I'm out, and there is always more to learn.

Not up to them dude. It all depends on who is in command of the whole mess. Last tour, even dudes with EoTechs (552 Rev F....the one thats in the system) weren't allowed to use em. Depends on your trade and where you go too. Some organizations are more "forgiving" than others for weapon modifications.

EO sucks ass -- I'm not paid by Aimpoint unless I am doing Demos - so this is my own thoughts.
It can give a slight edge to an excellent shot over the Aimpoint - but put 99.9% of people in a kill house with either - and in an honest run the Aimpoint will likley due better.

With L3 taking it over their QC has dropped - they send units out that have known faults and not until a US Mil command sends out tech warnings and stop issance do they fix it.

Having any piece of kit that you can't service or replace in the field can be a hinderance rather then a help.

Considering how little it takes to make an elcan go south I would leave it at home for the hunt. When you shoot the animal you want to be sure you are going to hit where you aim.

Kevin, have you had any experience with the US Optics SN4? It seems to offer decent versatility and come in a little lower than the Short Dot (depending on options). Though the reticle choices aren't optimal, I'm guessing the quality is good.

US Optics told me they ship to Canda in the spring, great! In Oct I have the funds to purchase so I call them to place my order. Sorry we don't sell outside the USA. Big time 180 or mixed signals??? Canadian value decrease has made buying their products uneconomical for me now. Anyone else have this experiece?
