Elcan SpecterOS 3.0

To me, it seems to offer everything an ACOG offers (with different means of illumination) for hundreds of dollars cheaper ($1020 when not on sale)... I see ACOGs all over this forum, but have yet to see a single OS 3.0. Searching here on CGN, a few guys have tossed in a post giving it a thumbs up, but any kind of review has been illusive.... google, youtube turn up nada.

The OS is a very tall sight and almost bulky, because they decided to stick a tall finger adjustable turret at 12 oclock and put a plastic rail in front of it. This means it is almost too tall to mount a mini reflex. Worst of all, it cuts down situation awareness as it cuts off even more peripheral vision than the old C79(because of the giant rubber cover). You have to dip the rifle even more to take a look what it is ahead of you, or somehow extend you neck more at prong position. It sucks when wearing a helmet while the flak vest is fighting to keep the helmet down.

Furthermore, ACOG is lighter and have a smaller foot print. The after market mounting hardware for ACOG is also more robust and more zero repeatable than the single thumb screw of OS 3.0. The exposed finger adjustable turrets on the OS 3.0 are also asking for trouble in the field as a general issue sight.

The OS 3.0 could be a great sight for KD shooting on a flat range. But for the above reasons, ACOG and the fix 4X Elcan Spectre ( FIST sight ) are more preferred than the OS.

Some good points above, but for a civi without a helmet and not being in a fighting situation I don't see a draw back to the layout.

The adjustable turrets require deliberate manipulation to adjust. They are well protected by the rubber bumpers and require a firm grip regardless.

Given that I have seen zero issued however, gives credence to GTs point that there are better options for duty use.

To each there own, depending on the intended use.

I asked A-Tech about adding windage knobs to the model with the elevation sights and this was their response:

"Unfortunately we cannot accommodate your request. The ELCAN’s come as is and due to their design they don’t allow for much in the way of modifications."

Seems what you see in the A and B models are what you get, nothing else.

Who did you talk to? Armament Technology?

Mine just arrived today. Got the B model. Stoked to sight it in tomorrow morning!

I'm interested in an Elcan OS as well and was wondering:

-is there any benefit over having external adjustments as opposed to the ballistically calibrated model?
-I plan on using it for an MK18, would the Elcan be "too much scope" for an SBR?
-can the Elcan OS be used with the Bindon Aiming Concept?

cheers....

This is the 'A' model reticle - didn't notice the one above is the 'B' model. Why Elcan wouldn't put BOTH into a single model, I have no idea.

EDIT: Also note that the ideal sight picture is NOT a perfect 'circle' - it's a bit of a rounded square. Makes no difference to me, but it's not a 100% clear circle like it is on an ACOG or I think the C79 Elcan. Overall still a GREAT optic with very good glass, as you would expect.

Zeroed mine this morning and was quite impressed. It was pretty damn cold out though. Great glass, as everyone else has said, really nice and clear. Had it zeroed in 9 shots then started stretching it's legs a bit. My range is all in yards but had already run some numbers through JBM so knew how to relate the drops to the range settings in metres on the sight. Was dead on out to 325 yards or so on steel. When I went to the longer range to shoot out to 400 and 475, the 400yard gong was obstructed by a snow drift (if I was in the prone) and I honestly wasn't sure if I was hitting the 475 yard gong. 62gr. .223 doesn't generate as nice a ping as 168gr .308, haha. I'll have to bring a spotter next time! I had limited time but did some offhand shooting as well and in answer to Jmac604, you can shoot it both eyes open which I guess is Bindon Aiming Concept?
