Electrical tape over end of muzzle?

I know they used to use condoms back in world war 2 to keep water and debris out. and I guess it makes sense to do it during hunting as well.

Have used tape on everything from 22 mag to 300 win works well no complaints. Cheap insurance againts bad things in barrel!

Thanks for the tip, I put a piece of electrical tape over the end of my barrel while rabbit hunting yesterday. No snow or branches in the barrel. Last time I went out, I checked my barrel about a dozen times through the afternoon (when it wasn't protected).

If anything I'd avoid using red or orange tape. The tips of toy guns are often colored red or orange to identify them as toys. I'm not sure if this could lead to problems. I can't see anyone having a problem with black.

Nope, just grabbing my gun (muzzle covered with latex condom) by the muzzle with his bare hand produced a rash on the palm of his hand. Wound up having to go back to camp to get some medication for it. Contact allergies such as this are not uncommon.

Electrical tape or similar works fine. Haven't used finger cots, balloons or condoms due to hunting buddies having latex allergies.

Does anyone here put electrical tape over the end of their muzzle when hunting to keep debris out of the barrel? I have seen a few pics in hunting mags and am curious if this is a standard practice.

Also, if so, does it cause any safety or accuracy concerns?

Yup. And no it does not change your point of impact. After seeing a gun blow up in a buddies hands on a snowy day, I treat it like the American Express Card. I don't leave home without it.

Yep, he was quite pissed off as it was his trigger hand and it kept itching (pun not intended) so that he cleanly missed a nice buck on the way back to camp.

Freezer tape can be a ##### to get off the barrel if it is left on for any length of time. I use electrical tape, and even after a few weeks, it easily peels off.

What about taping with a muzzle break? I put a balloon on my 416 rem mag muzzle brake and moisture got in and rust started. Maybe a finger condom is a tighter fit over a MB? Or does anyone just tape the whole thing? Cheers, Dave

Would it be the same situation with a shotgun? I'm suspecting that the same principles would apply. I live on a ranch in the mountains and usually carry a Marine Magnum when I'm out-and-about.

been taping for 30 years- no issues. I use either electriical or camo tape with a few inches spare tape wrapped around the barrel at the muzzle.

btw do you guys unwrap the tape first, or just blow it off with the shot?
i take the midget condoms off mine because i dont want to have to go looking for them afterwards, but i always wondered if thicker tape like duct tape would cause (albeit less severe) overpressure problems like a snow-obstructed barrel.

No change in POI or overpressure problems...at least not that I've ever seen.
