Elk or black bear with 223 softpoint?

I'm convinced now. After the looong shot I made on a coyote last month with my .223 :sniper: I should be good to go. Moose, elk, blackbear, sheep and deer should be easy with the right bullet. And if the animal I shoot at gets away, so what. There's lots more where that one came from :) No more of those vastly over powered .30-06/.270/.338 class of guns for me. They are too loud & kick too much anyway. Time to hit the reloading bench and work up some big game loads for my .223 then look for some spring bears to test bullets out on

I've seen a bull Elk hit in the lungs @100 yds with 180 gr out of an 06 go a mile and a half. And thats a mile and a half in the foothills, we figured it added a full day to pack that bastard out. Same senerio with a 223 and I think you're just feeding the wolves.

I have a problem believing that an elk double-lunged with an '06 went anywhere near 1½ miles unless it was a non-expanding bullet being used. After shooting over 3 dozen of the big cervids, and seeing their tenacity for life, I would buy one going 250-350 yards after a solid lung hit, but 1½ miles??? Either a "fringe" hit or lungs were not hit. But on topic...while the 223 with the right bullet will kill larger animals, that does not mean it is a good choice, and I'm not in favor of poking at elk with a 223, period!! Regards, Eagleye.
