Completely off topic, but can someone please fix this &*#$*#$ website so that we don't get "hugs and kisses" everytime someone spells the word S H I T.

And I agree 100%. :)

To continue your off topic....

Fix this $%#^&* website so you can criticize Police....I've noticed that criticizing cops here merits infractions....
Kind of tells me who's running the show here...

strike #2 for me for criticizing Cops....

If 12 licensed hunters shot 12 elk is that a slaughter ????
If those were the tags they were drawn, for that WMU, and took their proper species and ### of animal; No.

When's the last time 12 buddies all drew tags for elk and went out and got them on the same day, from the same WMU.

What if God came down and killed every elk in the world, is that slaughter? Aren't "what if" games fun?

Hunting in this province will be finished in the next five years unless the aboriginal people start policing their own. They need to realize that they're not just sticking it to "whitey" when they do something like this, they're hurting themselves and future generations as well. Once the moose and elk are wiped out in the special draw and archery zones the only ones that will be hunting are the people that can afford to fly in somewhere. The sheer stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze.

My ancestors trace back to Canada as of the 17th century. I am as white as you get. I didn't take jack :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: from you. You deserve no special privileges.

well the natives did have this land before the euro's came here sure no body owned the land untill the brits and french decided it was theirs now that said im only part native(the rest from europe) i dont think mixed blood should get anything special and i dont think the natives should be able to hunt this was off the reserve(ie off need tags a fallow seasons and regs) but there is alot of racism towards natives on this part of the forum

Yep, some bands have gotten the message and have started self regulating by initiating their own tag system, but most of them continue to allow their members to over harvest for profit rather than harvest for food. I see over harvesting all the time with the walleye spawning run...the natives spear them in the shallow river while it is listed as a fish sanctuary (whitey not allowed to fishy) then sell them out of the back of a pick up on the reserve.

If the provincial officials award 12 tags as part of a draw season this is no slaughter, it is has been deamed sustainable by the biologists. When 100,000+ people of aboriginal/Metis decent have the right to do this every day of the year it is a slaughter.

Dear Mr. Mackintosh,

I am writing you in regards to a the troubling video posted on YouTube.ca of the slaughter of approximately 12 elk in the Duck Mountain area in December 2012.

I am deeply concerned by the continued decline of big game populations in Manitoba and the increase of unregulated hunting in the province. Many prominent biologists in the province feel that if current policies are left in place some big game species will be eradicated from Manitoba. Although many theories have been put forth as to the causes of the extreme reduction in moose and elk populations, videos, such as the aforementioned, seem to point clearly at unregulated hunting as a major contributing factor. I am asking you to take immediate action to stop such destruction of our wildlife and put in place policies to cease these types of activities. As you are aware, moose populations are at a critical level in certain regions of Manitoba and may never recover. I fear that elk populations will suffer the same fate. I am writing this letter not only as an avid outdoors-person, but also as a concerned citizen of Manitoba.

I am certain that you and the NDP government of Manitoba will take swift action to protect these species, which belong to all citizen of Manitoba. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

MP for Dauphin/Duck Mountain Region

So how many people will 12 elk feed for a winter...12 families??? I'm pretty sure a lot more are being shot and these 12 are only a drop in a bucket!!
Revoke the right to subsistence hunt and issue monthly government meat coupons.... most likely it would start a shyt storm but something has to be done.

You're goddamn right it would start a :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:storm. That's the LAST thing we need, is another government handout for freeloaders.

A tag system for aboriginal hunters would sort this out...

There's already a tag system in place. How about the laws stop being racist (treating one ethnic group differently JUST BECAUSE OF RACE) and make EVERYONE follow it.

I'm all for traditional hunting rights, so leave the 4x4, the quad, the rifle, the steel knives and the booze at home. Take your hand made bow, you stone tipped arrows, your stone knives and your dog and hunt as you ancestors did. If you don't want to do it that way then follow the same laws I have to.

I'm ok with this. I would have NO problem taking my handmade bow with handmade stone or bone arrowheads into the bush, on foot, if I could hunt wherever and whenever I please.

but there is alot of racism towards natives on this part of the forum

And what some people are calling racism, is simply some of us wanting all Canadians to be equal. That by definition is the opposite of racism. However allowing anyone special privileges because of their race, is most definitely racism.

Do you honestly expect me to believe that our NDP government will now reverse that decision, which was largely based on a Supreme Court of Canada ruling, and subsequently implement a system where First Nations and Metis have to abide by seasons, bag limits and tags?.

As it would be, the tag system here was brought in while Bob Rae resided as Ontario Premiere...This area to reverts to Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, as does your's...Never say never! Post #88 has the right idea....

In reality, deer populations are way down in southern Manitoba. They are few and far between on crown land.

Fortunately, much of the crown land has been bought up by farmer's in the past decade.

There are two options for deer where I live - get to know a farmer or buy some prime hunting land.

You have a very small section of Ontario where a handful of treaty indians have a "tag system" or "agreement" with the MNR. Don't try to make people believe it's province wide. Is there any effort being made to expand this system? How about in NW Ontario areas where the first nations population is high and so are the NDP voters? Not likely.

You caught my smart a$$ statement.

At least deer will have some place to hide to avoid slaughter.

Wildlife in MB will be hunted to extinction in the next 5 years. It's all okay according to the NDP.

Private land is a good thing for these deer. But in the big picture it is never good to over-privatize what used to be crown land.
As bad as our provincial party is, They will always be better than the NDP. Hopefully the wildrose will take over.

Never did any such thing..

Not sure, I don't live there...I care more what goes on where I reside...Do you?

Actually suprises me , On the island the Locals here actually do run on a tag system for Roosevelt Elk and have draws with in the reserves. Most of the draws are cows and then a few Bulls. Fish and game issues each reserve a number of tags and then the members of the band put into the lottery, Members may or may not get drawn. Also the Natives here do not hunt outside the season. I know for sure that the majority of the locals take it quite seriously to where there working with the guides and generally take younger bulls, leaving the bigger bulls for the outfitters... not always but alot of the time.

Of course there a few that are not on the program and are taking elk when they shouldnt be... No diffrent than white people. Seems like once a year theres an incident where 2 or 3 elk will get dumped and left for the crows, But that may not necessarily be the natives my any means.

Seems the system is working quite well here. Our Elk population is growing conciderabley every year and there releasing more and more tags for everyone all the time as we run on LEH for Roosevelt... Lots of places are 100 - 1 odds with only 3 or 4 tags getting drawn.
