Elk slaughter in Manitoba

i'm one of those aboriginals (metis) you folks around here seem to hate so much
I can't believe the comments that are being made here by some and i can't believe CGN is standing by

talk in these manners about jews, east indians, black folks, chinese....... and you could be charged under the crimminal code
some of you should get off your keyboards and do something constructive like write a letter to your MP and stop your silly whining on the internet
it's getting beyond old.

I am Metis also but for the benefit of our wildlife,We should all be hunting under the same laws and rules,And yes I did fire off a bunch of e-mails about this incident to many Gov't authorities!!!!!!!

I agree that conservation is key
But I want to see proof that the parties actually committed an offense before I want to see hundreds of posts slagging aboriginals. Remember, we are innocent until proven guilty.
So far all I see is people spouting off.
As far as my research shows me, no crimes were committed by mr Flett and crew. They were as it seems, acting under the laws as it pertains to them.
I might not "like" what I see in the video his son made, but as a Canadian, it doesn't give me the right to jump on my keyboard and start native bashing and spewing racist crap.
I'm Metis and proud of it, and I won't sit by and see the anti aboriginal sentiment before me and not speak out against it.
Find proof that mr Flett and crew broke the law, or negatively affected the elk populations in that area as a whole. Then, and only then can we villify this crew of hunters and leave the slagging of all aboriginals out of it.

We are in need of equal rights for every Canadian citizen regardless of what the current laws state, if you consider that racist then I'm not sure how to counter that and I'm equally unsure if you're even willing to accept counter arguments. I think you've noticed that the animosity toward your people's sense of entitlement is growing. Don't mistake that with racism, it's a rights based movement.
The treaties are antiquated in most respects and need to be scrapped. If the native/Metis population continually insists on adhering to treaties, then let's start by applying to law all that's contained in them, not picking out the raisins. Much of what's written is NOT in your favor, you should read them sometime.

Interesting comment, would you be so kind as to elaborate!

no, wanting equality for all canadians is not racism and none speaking to that should feel bad about posting it.
it's the many other comments , like above where buddy says this is what wars are started over...... childish, immature attitudes like this are not warranted
the villifying of aboriginals is rampant in this thread and in the algonquin thread and rasicm is the underlying tone.

let's look at all the "special" privleges we give other folks in this country.
like turbans in the legion or other places we as canadians remove our hats out of respect and because it's part of our culture..... my god what an insult to canadian tradition
or kids of certain nationalities carrying ceremonial knives to elementary school......
or ...... the fact i can't read a box of cereal without getting the french side first

there are hundreds of examples of how the canadian government sets us all up to feel racist sentiment.
culturally diverse, religeously diverse Canada...... follows this idea except when it comes to it's aboriginal populace
as i sit back and watch all the changes canada has made even in the past 50 years to accomodate and bend over backwards for it's multicultural immigrant populace but yet it has continued to marginalize aboriginals. Quebec itself is such a huge example of how all of canada has had to bend financial, culturally, linguistically, to treat and recognize that province and it's populace like they are special and unique. I don't see the same sentiment towards quebec that i see towards aboriginals.
you know folks don't live on reserves because they want to right?? they were put there by treaty or other means and not given the same opportunities as all canadians and we are here to demand the end of this kind of segregation. we want to be the distinct societies that we are, practice our way of life, customs, language, religions, just like all other "races" are allowed to in this country.

I will say this, when it comes to crimes against wildlife and the land, I will stand beside you all, regardless of race or background, to fight injustices. What i won't do is sit back and watch as people go on a witch burning without any concrete facts.
if the manitoba wildlife folks come back and say mr flett and crew has caused damage to the herd or depleted elk numbers in that area by irresponsible hunting actions, I myself and others like me , as aboriginals, as Metis, and more importantly as canadians, will without hesistation, be making some serious noise within our own ranks.
I agree, we need to come to a staus quo that works for everyone, but that ain't gonna happen here on CGN.

Well said I'm sick of the native bashing as well.

No, they did not break any laws and herein lies the problem. They can do this every day of the week and still not break the law. It opens hunting to legal abuse. See what has happened to the moose in this part of the country.

Like what you are saying.

I have been following this thread for a long time, the reason I have not commented yet is because I am not that good at this stuff.
It is not a really a matter of what is legal or illegal (because almost nothing is illeagl for native harvesters) it as more of what is right or not. It was not illegal to shoot 12 elk that were baited in a 8 foot high fence but was it the right thing to do? It is not illegal for natives to net and spear spawning walleye but is it the right thing to do?
If I cannot eat it I will not shoot it (except for coyotes) I cannot understand why 4 people need to shoot 12 elk to survive in 2013 or net 200 pounds of spawning walleye, it just dosen't make any sense to me.
Can someone please explain to me why these things have to be done in 2013.

I agree, its not a question of illegal/legal its more an ethical question in my books, us as hunters should all want to conserve not cause unesscessary destruction. Just my opinion, Ive seen the damage first hand where I hunt with the moose.

Can a sustenance hunter in Manitoba sell the meat? In Ontario with the new Algonquin deal native sustenance hunters will be allowed to sell all wild game and fish harvested to generate income for themselves. If they harvested these animals and sold the meat would this not be in keeping with the traditions of their people? Hunting to generate revenue to sustain their lifestyle? I don't see a problem with them doing things like this if it helps them earn income to buy gas and such. That's what idle no more is about, the natives only want what is rightfully there's.. The fish and wildlife, the natural gas and oil, the lumber, the hydro electricity, it's all from land that we stole from them. Our forefathers who came here in the 1800s learned how to manage the land and harvest the lumber. The natives taught us how to harness the rivers for electricity and where to find the oil deep in the ground. Without them we would have nothing today and I firmly believe all Canadians should stand up and fight to give natives every cent we ever made from the mines, and oil wells and lumber harvested on THEIR land after all Canada is our home ON native land.... Just kidding they lost the war time to grow up and be like everyone else.

45ACPKING, if someone (like me) is a racist because we simply want equality, then I guess I'm guilty as charged. I'm racist because I dont think ANYONE should wear a hat or turban or anything on their head inside a Canadian Legion, I'm racist because I dont think ANY religious belief should be exempt and their parishioners be allowed to carry a large knife to school, I'm racist because I dont think anyone should be allowed to cover their face completely when in general public, this is Canada, NOT the middle east. I'm racist because my kid no longer hears the national anthem in school every morning, or the lords prayer. I'm racist because I can only "apply" to harvest certain big game animals with a very slim chance of getting a tag and Natives seem to have almost no limitations on what they can harvest. I hate a lotof things that happen in my country, I think a lot of things are unfair. So you need to blame Betty and Paul (my parents) for this because I was raised with 2 sisters and everything had to be fair or it was all out war in our house hold LOL.

If the hunters that took those 12 elk didnt break any laws (your non existent laws), then so be it, if they went back the next day and did it again, and the next day and the next day, then my complaint about being fair turns into a complaint about stripping the land of whats left. You cant hate or dislike someones opinions or their person simply because they want to be treated the same. With the benifits your people are given from the Canadian Government, I dont understand why there arent more native doctors, lawyers, engineers, whatever, Education is something that is given to you is it not? I will be lucky if I can send my kid to a local college and she will have to get a part time job during her studies just to help pay her tuition....do you see WHY people want some sort of balance here, some sort of equality? Try looking at both sides of the coin, not just the dark side from hundreds of years ago.

My thoughts exactly

Sorry, I left one more group of people I am a racist against off of my list of examples, I see far to many people that sponge off the system, any race or color, doesnt matter, when I see people capable of working, and smart enough to work, but smart enough to get by without working because a monthly cheque shows up once a month, ya, I'm racist towards those ones as well. This is actually one of my largest hate groups, but thats probably because at 41 years old, and working since I was 13 years old, I have NEVER collected unemployment and I hate paying other peoples bills with my hard work while they refuse to support themselves with hard work of their own.
