Just got back from a short elk Hunt. I was able to collect a very nice mature 5x5 bull elk with a 270 Browning FN safari, which was purchased from 1899 just 2 months ago. Range was lonnnng, right at 425 yards and while I needed a couple of insurance shots   the `130 gr Speer Grand slams performed well and I now can concentrate on mule Deer hunting, with a 6.5-06 supplied by Casull, built by RickF/bill Leeper

Pics will follow soon, Bull weighted 425 dressed lbs/ so about 850 lbs live.

Regards

can't be true  I was always told that a 270 was waaaay too small for elk,......especially at that range...must have been 42.5 yards

Good going Dave......pics to follow we hope?

Any room in your elk camp for one more?....I just spent a week out by the Pembina....saw nothing but tracks...no hooves in them either :D

While I do believe that I would have had a quicker kill with my 300 Win pre 64 M70, There is still the fact that you have to hit them toi kill them, having the extra confidence in the unit, makes a lot of difference. That said, I will not hesitate to use the 270 on any subsequent hunt. BTW I gave the bull 8" of daylight over his back, which means 15" of drop which ended up being the correct holdover in thgis case.

Yes Rembo, pics will arrive very soon

that is gooood shootin' just like pickin' off gophers with the 22-250 eh?

Ya just had to mention your Pre 64 300 Winny didn;t ya? .....and I sold mine..... :(

Ted, too many rifles, not enough chances to use them. Actually, that FN will be seeing some good duty on WT, and mule deer Hunts. It too is a shooter, and it will kill some game it just has to wait its turn.

1899- It is an accurate rifle, I still believe that I can improve on the load/bullet ect. This 130 GS is running at just over an inch. It IS a picky unit, with some loads giving 2.5" groups, I was happy to see it likes the GS

Agreed.............EVERYBODY knows, (cuz they read it in a magazine, like me) that the absolute minimum for elk is a 35 Whelen. :!:

Nice :D

SC.........................

SC I too agree on the Whelan, exept that the mortar like trajectory makes for some tough figggerin on elevation hold past 250 yds :p :p

I am glad to be using the GS, which I had not used on game in 10 years, penetration and performance were definitely adequate.

the best decision I made on the shot was not rushing, I looked and found a nice sapling with a fork in it 10"off the ground. This made for a very steady prone shot.
