Elongated holes at close range. Why???

Done. Hard to imagine the occasional blow by would have any significant affect on the life of a semiauto range-rifle. I don't think I will loose any sleep over shooting this ammo from time to time.

for the amount most guys shoot, under 5k, during their lifetime, not a big issue, if you plan on keeping the rifle in top shape for life then great. Afterall they are replaceable, just like a car, run bad gas, have issues, run good gas, have less issues and a more reliable car. No different. In the end its all about price, what cost less? running cheap ammo and replacing parts, or running good ammo and replacing less parts. Your money your call.

How do you figure .22lr doesn't count towards the amount of rds I fire in a lifetime? Just cos its not expensive? Makes no sense...

I hope you meant to type .223

.22LR doesn't really count. It also cost's about $25-$30 per 500 rounds compared to about $250 for the cheapest .223 available right now.
