You really need to give more information. A "sporterized 303" could be a P-14 rifle, a Number 1 rifle or a Number 4 rifle, all of which require different mounts.
If you have a Number 4 rifle, then a "no drill-no tap-no gunsmith" mount is available IF the receiver has not been altered.
Once again, pictures are invaluable in helping to identify a firearm.

If it is an SMLE No.1 MKIII I have a set of rings and a mount that I haven't used on mine yet. I can give you some pictures and the pertinent information from what I have and the costs associated. My mount requires no drilling and tapping.
Thats very interesting, I thought for sure it would need to be drilled. I will check tonight when I get home. Its been in the locker for two years and damned if I can remember the exact model....thanks .
"...heard its a difficult mount..." More that the mounts aren't that great due to the rifle not being designed to take 'em. The no gunsmithing type requires the removal of the rear sight, so make sure you put on a decent scope.

IMHO, the best mount for the SMLE or whatever it might be (incorrectly) called: there are about a dozen names for it) is the S&K Inst-Mount for the Lee-Enfield Number 1 Rifle. It is no-drill, no-tap, fits to your rifle in a few minutes, maintains itself through tension rather than compression, no loose parts, no moving parts, rock-solid and takes standard Weaver rings and you do NOT have to remove the rear sight.
Best mount for the Number 4 is the S&K Insta-Mount for the Lee-Enfield Number 4. Again, rock-solid if a little tall.
Best mount for the P-14 is also S&K, interchanges with the P-17.
ANY of these can be moved from rifle to rifle, require no drilling holes and they all WORK. They are the BEST of the mounts available, which is the reason that I recommend them.

Your rifle is an Australian made Short Magazine Lee Enfield Number 1 Mark III rifle. As mentioned, there are mounts available that you can install without having to drill or tap the receiver.

It is more important that the metal isn't cut down (i.e. barrel shortened) and not drilled and tapped (so don't, if the rest of the metal is untouched.) You can replace the wood eventually. It looks like your rifle justifies extra trouble and expense for a no-drill mount.
Oh yes, one that nice deserves an S&K mount.
Be sure you ordar the one to take Weaver rings; they also have ones to handle their own rings, which are scarce and expensive, although very nice. Weaver rings you can get anywhere and are considerably cheaper.

What is the general opinion of a scope on a 303? I have a guy here at work that insists that it will never shoot properly because a 303 is the only rifle made that shoots up. He also thinks that regardless of how its mounted the scope will need to be reset after every five shots...what the hell is he talking about ?
