Enfield AIA mags--How legal are they?

I just pre-ordered 3 20 round AIA mags. This is a dream come true. Finally a full capacity magazine in my semi auto rifle. I have two 10 round mags, and they work great. Looking forward to using the 20.

Just to state it again, these magazines have previously been brought to the attention of the RCMP/Firearms lab, and they were given the green light. Granted, their word isn't worth the paper it's printed on anymore, but they have confirmed that these magazines are acceptable in their full capacity.

green lit by the firearms lab, just like the Swiss Arms rifles 12 years ago, and now prohibited :(

Unless it's a Lee-Enfield.

This is because of full-auto Enfield conversions like the Charlton Rifle. The magazines would be limited to five because of the possibility they could be used in a Charlton, but the exception allows ten rounds (and no more).

Incidentally, paragraph 2.b of Part 4 exempts non-reproduction mags made for the Charlton as well.

according to the lawyers on the site, that part 4 is an exemption to the prohibition, and not a prohibition itself. So it would read along the lines of "magazines holding more than 5 rounds for a semi-auto are prohibited, except the 10 round Lee Enfield mags" (the Lee Enfields came with 10 round mags). This statement is different from your interpretation (which I loosely summarize here) that "Lee Enfield mags are limited to 10 rounds".

The bottom line: there is no restriction on Lee Enfield mags, and magazines designed for bolt action rifles are non-prohibited, no matter how may cartridges they hold. Since they are non-prohibited, they can be used in a semi-auto, no matter how many rounds they hold.

The "Lee Enfield Clause" has nothing to do with it in this situation. I was proven wrong when the whole talk about AIA mags being reproduced started. The AIA rifle is a M10. Just because it has similarities with an Enfield does not make it an Enfield, hence 20 round capacity.

Boy, am I happy I was wrong.

Edit: ^^ maybe I'm wrong again. I'll shut up and wait till September :)

So being that CMI is doing a run for us, is it possible to get them stamped for their designed use? I am also very leery about the "perceived legality" of this magazine, regardless of actual legality, as discussed earlier. The LAR mags are marked as such, and it seems that this is mostly acceptable to the LEOs...

The AIA mags are visually distinguishable from M305 mags. Carry one with you. When it comes down to it, if a LEO wants to charge you and confiscate your property, there's not much you can do other than try to reason with them, then ultimately try fight it in the courts.

Yes, yes, yes, and YES! Tell that to the judge.

I'm planning to carry a copy of that page of the CFA with me whenever I take the mag shooting.
It might confuse a cop, but at least that's something! ;0]

What's the CFA?

I currently carry the RCMP firearms bulleton, and a copy of the actual firearms regulations under the criminal code. I actually printed and highlighted the relevent sections out. I'll also be carrying my reciepts for those AIA magazines as well as documentation and pictures of the actual AIA rifles.

It would be nice to get rid of magazine restrictions all together with a good re write of the laws but with the political nature of the RCMP I think a re write would be a battle 'Royal"! With all sorts of fear mongering and out right lies from the Uniforms supported by the media.

It's nice that someone is bringing in some AIA mags and I'm sure the sounds of 20 round bursts of bump fire celebration will be heard across the country!
Unfortunately some of that celebration is bound to bring complaints and the complaints will bring investigations followed by yup you guessed it.... Fear mongering and lies.

Act responsibly with your regular capacity magazines and prove that we can handle the truth.

The Lee-Enfield clause is an exemption to the stupid mag capacity law. It was done to placate native hunters and nothing else. It has nothing whatever to do with New Zealander (Only 1500 Charlton's made) LMG's or any other conversion you'll never see.
An AIA mag runs $69.95 when Marstar has 'em. Kind of a pricey way to get around a stupid law.
