Enlighten me on 7mm remington mag please.

Short track

I'd like to see those numbers on a Chrony with a Piezo attached. That's not a fact by any means and I am very skeptical. At 72kpsi maybe....

Check out accuratereloading forum. Top of the forum shows .30-06 pressure test data. Reloader17 2924fps 180 partition, 64400psi. Sorry no link as I am trying to learn this tablet. Hodgson data shows H4350 with 150 BT at 3068fps at a meager 48400cup. 165 sierra imr 4350 2934fps at 57600psi. I think we can extrapolate a little bit to show my numbers may be low even. I have personally worked up reloader 17 with 180 sierras to 2850 and showed absolutely no pressure signs in 24" barreled vanguard.

7 mm rem mag. 30-06 energy at 270 speeds. That's about it. It's not fast enough for the speed demons. It doesn't throw the weight for the heavy bullet crowd. It fits nicely for the North American hunter who wants a magnum they can handle.

I still prefer the 30/06 my self but if I found a sweet deal on a mint Parker Hale in 7 mm mag I may have to add it to the collection

Have a 700 BDL in that cal. Never took it hunting but it is a great plinker and shoots nice without the beating a 300 mag gives.

Would it be as popular if it was named the .284-PPS , Powder Puff Softie?

There are MANY chamberings with a 7mm projectile and similar case capacities , why? Because they work on game, simple.

Don't buy it because of the chambering, buy it because it fits you, you like the feel and you can shoot it comfortably.

Am I saying I dislike or have negatives on it's performance? Not at all, however the fit and feel of the rifle does trump chambering. It will perform as you require as will a great many other chamberings, up side is that it is fairly common which makes feeding it less of a chore than many others.

If you reload, the Swift Scirooco II in 150gr is a wonderful all round bullet for 7mm bore rifles. Also some factory loads are available with this projectile.

As for moose, how far can you reliably hit a 1 gallon milk jug 10 out of 10 shots? That will answer the question as to what distance you can comfortably shoot at in that position and environment(sitting, prone, standing, rested, etc...)

With respect to the .30/06 load data from Accurate Reloading, it might be worth noting that you won't come across many '06 hunting rifles with 26" barrels, most are less than 24". I also found it curious that their 220 MKs (1.4845" long) keyholed while 230 gr Hybrids (1.6855' long) Berger and Bryan Litz claim will stabilize in a 1:10. I've got a box of 230s, but I'm waiting for the weather to improve before I start to work up loads for them. I see no benefit in attempting to magnumize the .30/06, its ballistics have worked just fine for quite some time now, and if shooting match bullets rather than game bullets is your preference, German Salazar provides some fine .30/06 match data in his 3 part essay, "Accuracy Secrets of the .30/06" which can be found on line if you Google "The rifleman's Journal".

With respect to 7mm bullets, there is nearly as broad a selection of 7mm game bullets as there is .30 caliber, so if you can't find one to suit your needs you're not looking very hard. I was brought up on .30 caliber cartridges, so they are what I prefer, but I've owned, shot, and loaded for a number 7mm rifles including 7X57, 7-08, 7mm RM, and I had the opportunity to shoot a 7mm Ultra. If you like to shoot accurate rifles across long stretches of real estate, one of the 7 magnums is a fine choice.

Nomad 68, neither you nor your buddy will be disappointed with your respective choices.

My howa 1500 in 7 rem mag is similar to the vanguard you are looking at. Same manufacturer. If you can get a muzzle break fitted on it, it will be the nicest gun you can shoot. Mine is currently zero'd at 200 with 1.5-2.5 inch groups. I am loading 170 gr bullets. I have yet to put crosshairs on anything except paper but will not be afraid to use it at distance.

Buy the gun.

The Vanguard rifles are quite heavy, and recoil is quite manageable, so the last thing that I would do is have a muzzle brake installed.

If you reload, why bother asking and just buy it and let us know the range results. I have been fascinated by it but I hunt heavy bush so I usually reach for my .375 with a low power scope on moose trips. I would love one but it would just end up a safe queen/range gun.

i love 7's. i used to use a varity of bullets now i use the 139gmx in my 7 mag for every thing big or small. in my 280 i use 140 ab's because the shoot so well.

I have used 7mm-08, 7-08AI, 280, 280AI and 7 Rem Mag.

Seven's give good performance in most chamberings from 6 lb lightweigths to 9 lb heavy sporters.

I tend to look at the bullet end of a cartridge rather than the headstamp end.

If it will launch a 140 gr .284" bullet with a decent BC at 2900 fps(7-08) to 3300fps (7 Rem Mag)it will work well.

I have since gone to 160's in the 7 Rem Mag with Rel 25. About 3000 is pretty predictable in a 24" barrel.

The recoil of my 8lb 7 Mag feels about like my 7-1/4 lb 280AI and it's 200 fps faster. What's not to like?

We fired a dozen rifles yesterday, but I was focusing on my Finnlight in 7 RM.... very accurate with 150 gr. Silvertips, but I was most impressed with the 162gr. SST Superformance cartridges.... the rifle has a brand new muzzle brake, first time firing with the new brake.... shot targets and steel swingers out to 500 yards. I hope I can find a load that is as accurate as that factory load. Pin- point accuracy.... there's nothing like that feeling! personally I enjoy the big power of the magnums....I drive my poor old truck slowly and carefully, but shoot the Big Magnums....I guess that's my version of conspicuous consumption.... And with a brake there is a bit of "free lunch"......if you know what I mean.....

I firmly believe 308 is the biggest you need in NA unless you're going to Alaska.

That being said, the 7remmy is probably one of the most sensible magnums available. Fantastic numbers and recoil that isn't going to be a problem for practicing at the range. If you buy one just be aware you're probably going to be teased if you use it for small things like deer and black bear.

I hunted with a 7mm magnum model 70 for many years. Took moose, black bear, mule deer and blacktail deer with that rifle/caliber. It was a classic sporter Boss.
My thoughts
Was fantastic on moose with nosler partions. Was loud as all hell with the brake/balancer(BOSS)
Certainly killed both sizes of deer and black bear with authority, no problems... But it was loud as all hell.
Everything I shot at 100 yards or less had massive trauma and meat shock. The bear was the worst LOL and I'll only use that caliber again on the big mulies.
Loved the 7mm mag, gonna get one for the wife to shoot.
These days, it's my old and accurate lee enfield for the black tails and thick stuff/close range/back up rifle. .338federal for the big deer and black bears, and a .338 win mag for everything bigger that BC/Yukon/alaska has to offer :)

X 2 ! My Vanguard S2 is the most consistently accurate 7mm RM I have ever owned.... and I have had some dandies.
Recoil is all but nonexistent and I'm just a little old guy....

I have a Voere in 7mm Rem Mag. Got it new almost 50 years ago, and it was my only hunting rifle for many years, though it doesn't get out too often now. It''s a very light rifle, and it delivered fairly punishing recoil until I had a muzzle brake installed about 15 years ago. No problem putting 20 rounds or more through it now ... less muzzle jump, smaller groups. My current load uses a Barnes TSX. Somebody already mentioned meat "trauma" ... it can be very significant depending where you hit.
