MK III pros: the magazine release is located where it should be.

MK III cons: it has an unnecessary magazine disconnector safety; it has an unnecessary chamber loaded indicator; it has an unnecessary internally-mounted integral locking device.

The Ruger MK II is out of production. If you can find one, I would choose it over a MK III.

+1 on what Wendell said.
Look around for used as well. A well maintained .22 pistol will last many 10's-of-thousands of rounds. Heck, I've got a cheapie Norinco M93 that has seen at least 5000 rounds and it still runs great (but the rear sight is loose, I just keep it for kids to plink with, 'cause it's got quite a small grip).
A Ruger Mk1 in decent shape would also serve you well for the next couple decades, and don't discount the fixed sight versions, once you have a favourite load and get it dialed-in, you won't be playing with the sights anyway.

Wouldn't call the Ruger the best, but it isn't bad for the money. Triggers aren't great. If you opt for one of 'em, don't ever take it apart. They're a nightmare to get back together. No need to take it apart anyway.
"...got quite a small grip..." Easily fixed with aftermarket grips. Some of which aren't exactly inexpensive. At least you can get 'em for when your kids need a bigger grip.

Mark III 22/45 Bull barrel......built like a tank

:agree:
If you can find a plastic tank:D Seriously, I prefer the MkIII22/45 because it is a 1911 simulator/trainer. The grip angle and controls (safety/slide and mag release) are the similar to the 1911 format. So in the future, if you feel the desire to move up to centerfire caliber 1911s, your muscle memory has been trained for the 1911 and the transition will be easier and quicker.

My .02 only.

I have an MKIII 22/45 and it is an excellent pistol. Very accurate and reliable. I was reading in an earlier post not to take it apart, I disagree. Keep the manual handy for the first couple of times until you understand why you need to do the things that they tell you to take it apart and put it back together (these are due to the magazine safety and correct placement of the hammer spring, ect). Oh, by the way some force is required to remove the barrel from the lower, I use a small plastic sledge. Again the manual will walk you through it.

are the Ruger Bearcat revolvers better than the MkII / MkIII automatics? cost more, but worth it?

How about a .22 revolver? Yes they can be hard to find for a good price but I just picked up a S&W K22 outdoorsamn and it is great. The best thing for me is it stops me from wanting to rapid fire and I want to concentrate more for each shot.

I find that I have to fight the temptation to empty the mag as fast as I can with my Sig Mosquito but not with the revolver.

:agree: The OP limited the choices to ruger mark II and III.

But if he is open to revolvers, that would be my pick. Better to learn trigger control and dsicipline, making every shot count. On the downside, a quality revolver is more expensive.

I was open the any other suggestions be revolver or semi.
Just bought a Ruger mk III target 5.5 ss bull barrel.
Hope it is a good buy!
revolver will be my next purchase. but not sure what!

Good choice, a keeper semi 22, IMO.

For a revolver, if you like Stainless, check out the S&W 617. Or a blued 17.
Preferably without the lawyer lock.

thanks to everyone for all the info.
you guys really help me in my decision to purchase MY first handgun.
Can't wait to try it!
Good day!
