Cant get them from the US because of the US won't let us export them and some ITAR bull####s. There are some in Canada that have been smuggled over the border but expect to pay $800+ and you don't have a warranty from L3.
Also don't plan on bringing it back into the US or you'll get F'd in the A. Search the Black Rifle and Optics forums for more info about the 553.
I plan on primarily mounting an EOTech on my flat-top AR-15.
The reason I like the 553 in principle is it sits higher and positions the reticle above the forward iron sight. The typical EOTech models position the reticle in-line with the iron sights for co-witnessing. I release this is great for intial sighting-in but don't want to spend all this money to have to look at my front sight with a pretty red halo around it...
At this time, I can't remove my front sight but might consider it in the future. I've also though of using the LaRue Tactical mount that adds ~1/4" rise to typical EOTech models.
1. What's the consensus on irons in the line-of-site or avoiding it with a riser?
2. Does anyone have feed back on the LaRue mount?
3. What's the consensus on AA or N battery models vs 123?
I personally think the 553 is a waste of money plus I don't like the ARMS levers.
The LaRue Eotech mount is great as it will raise the Eotech for lower 1/3 cowitness plus allows to take the unit off and install back on without re-sighting.
AA Vs 123, Availability ,cost,
I run a 552,I think the AA give you a longer run time,I could be wrong, I read it on the internet.it is a longer unit to use ,if space is limited you might want to use the 123s.
What's the deal with the set-screw? at the forward end? Does it apply pressure too? Is there some sort of pad/foot on the end of it? Pics?
I'm also starting to think 123 battiers (553) aren't cool if the s#~t hit the fan and I needed batteries pronto. With a AA EOTech I could score batteries from my neighbors TV remote
Don't get the N batt Eotech one Mine is 6 years old and it will use up a set in one day if left on!!! unless room on your top i913 is critical and after years of light use it takes 10-15 pushes to get the reticle to appear bright enough to see on a bright day! not what you want in a Fast Moving Situation!
I still like the Eo But I think I am going to get an Aimpoint next
If you're interested in the height, go with a 557. It's the same lower-third cowitness, uses AA's (Lithiums last longer than standard, and either way longer than the CR123's), and you get a BDC reticle.
TSE carries / will carry them.
Larue's are just about as unobtanium as 553's, so unless you _really_ like the colour, use a 557.
Here's a pic of my 552 on the Larue mount. I like to keep the front sight blocks on my ARs when possible, and don't even notice it when firing this one due to the reticle and target focus.
It's a bit blurry (due entirely to my photography skills), but you can see how much of the sight picture is occupied by the FSB:
IMO, if you want an EO Tech, you won't go wrong with a 552. I find the mount gives the sight a much needed elevation boost.
YMMV.
If you guys want a QR mount, i'd try out the GG&G throw lever mount. Questar supposedly has it for around 150 bucks. GG&G say it re-mounts to within .5 MOA, so it holds zero not too bad.
