Eotech/Aimpoint On the hand-guard... Its a Canadian thing.

You have a larger field of view outside the housing of the optic. Make a circle with your fingers then place that 6 inches from your eye. Look around and notice how much your hand blocks your view. Now hold it 12-18 inches from your eye, you can see more of your "environment" instead of your hand. That's how I see it anyways

My understanding is that it it allows for faster target acquisition at close ranges. The 1st and 4th shot looks like close protection details (were my info was applied from), 5th pic looks like a contractor (old habits die hard?), 3rd and 6th pic looks like they would get the same advantage of the forward mounted optics. 3rd one:

One of the theories behind red dot/holo type sights was always to run them as far forward as possible. I actually tried it once on my AR just goofing around, using the carry handle and my Aimpoint out on the quad rail. Surprisingly wasn't that bad, even though it looks a little weird. I always found the dot very fast with both eyes open, actually felt pretty natural.
With JTF2 it's probably just a unit SOP that's stuck around from when they only had the fixed carry handle C8's, though it looks like now each guy has the option to set up his rifle to his personal preference from those pics at the bottom. Either way, I'm sure those fellas know what they're doing.

From what I have been told my some folks in the military (not JTF themselves) is for two reasons, both stated. There average GI's though so take it for what it is
1) More room for night vision systems mounted on the helmet
2) More spatial awareness ahead of them, eyes on the target first, optic follows

When I was in, friends in CSOR said they like it because as the rifle is raised from the low ready they can pick up the dot/holosight quicker.
Most used a detachable carry handle, I would be shocked to see a unit with the funding of CSOR using fixed carry handles.
I was never a fan of forward mounting, mostly because with the M203 the last thing I needed was more weight forward on the rifle. But overseas magnified optics were essential IMO, so I used a 1-4x.

1. Optics are not viewed with a helmet mounted NOD, that's what a PEQ/PAQ is for.
2. The reason some of them run their EOs like that is because some guys are running older uppers with fixed carry handles. Even after switching to a flat top upper some guys keep them there because it allows you to pickup the reticle with more speed during presentation.....remember, red dots were originally designed for use on handguns. Picture a cone coming out from the rear of the optic, if your head is in the cone the sooner you can see it, the further away the optic the wider the cone......if that makes sense.
3. You'll see some morons in the regular army do this without realizing that you can't just throw it up on your handguards, these people are stupid and are not to be emulated. You need a floated rail or one that simulates freefloat, KAC/DD ext...the same goes for mounting lasers.

For that, I believe (WILD SPECULATION!!!) that setting is for configurations such as TV-PressPass (sorry if I screwed up the Username) has on his Tavor, with the NOD and optic mounted, co-witnessed on the same rail.

I use to run my Eotech like that before I was told not to. Apparently heat generates failures in Eotechs. Mine never did fail (doesn't get all THAT warm shooting short strings in semi only) but I ditched the Eotech way back when anyways.

I never heard this to be a Canadian thing? a few of my friends down south like to put their optic at that place. I quite like it but I am no way an amazing shooter. But it makes me more comfy.
