Ethical hunting chalange

Prince George Rod and Gun Club.

Ha ha ha. Holding 4 ft when he should have held 7 at 1000m. I would love to have heard that one in person. He probably doesn't even know what 1000m looks like in the field.

I was quite surprised that I was the only one using a range finder with ballistics calc for the 1000 m shoot I was in. To me that is the only true way to get proper dope in the conditions that you are currently in. Most used range cards, but that doesn't in any way take into account your current conditions.

Still amazes me with the low cost of binos these days the amount of guys that hunt without them, much less hunt without any range finders. And they want to call themselves long range hunters???
Jeepers I haven't shot at Prince George since 1983 during the BP Nstional matches certainly enjoyed it though!🙂
At our matches and on any given day, Kestrels and other electronic ranging apps and rigs abound, except during our Fclass matches of course where they are prohibited on the line .
Our range is a "square" range though, so our targets are at a fixed distance so there is no need to range them , a person does need dope however.🙂

The use of the kestrel still perplexes me, especially at our range.

Sure you get a wind reading at your current position, but not at the intended range. At our range after the 500-900 m there is a swirl effect and you almost need to hold opposite of the current wind. Then again shifts past the 900m mark as it is higher up and get more of a blast of wind.

Same thing in actual shooting. You gotta take layout of the land into account and your ballistics curve, as its almost never really flat while out hunting unless you are in the prairies after prairie speed goats.

Needless to say the 1000m shoot was challenging with a heavy wind that day, that just didn't let up at all, but that is typical out there at our range.

I think.most use the Kestral for temperature and barometric pressure, the wind thing only gives you a guideline on the line like you stated wallz.
Our wind is so crazy because of our berms and surrounding terrain , Rob Furlong once stated that if you can make accurate wind calls on our range you can do it anywhere - and he shouid know!LOL

I need to start playing more with field positions. Not that I have any of my rifles in the same category as in the guys in the video, but still!
Go my moose this year at 270m from a kneeling position and he was running!
Luck perhaps… I don’t think so!
That said it is a much bigger target than a milk jug!

That’s an awesome shot on a running target.

And not a comp rifle in sight!

...these guys appeared to have nearly perfect conditions though.

To me atmospherics are the real variable. Range is just a number, and a modern rangefinder takes the guesswork right out of that component.

Wind on the other hand - that's an art, and it's more of a limiting factor for me than distance!

Nice to see people attempting it with their actual hunting rifles, still not a lot of actual hits in the 5” bullseye. Which is the goal of this challenge.

Good shooting regardless, majority of those hits were a dead animal. A challenge like this is pretty great practice no matter how you look at it.

That is an awesome video! Two of the 3 miss of the first round are so close still misses but not as bad as some of the one in Cortina’s video and with much lighter rifles and scopes!
