Ethical hunting chalange

It’s too bad we missed the shoot. I was all geared up and ready to go, but had something come up last minute or I would’ve been there.

I watched carleys video from the last shoot in the summer and she made all of the hits, but she wasn’t that fast. I didn’t check her time but I’m guessing it was over 20 seconds.
You guys were missed fir sure!
Yeah, Josh absolutely killed that speed shoot last year, but Carley did super as well.

Can we change the direction of this thread to a challenge? Milk jugs at whatever distance you think you can hit first shot with your hunting rifle in the field, not the gun range.

I wouldn't mind trying this challenge actually. I know what my rifle does at 300 from a cold bore shot if I do my part so pushing it to 500 "should" be attainable..... or I'd like to think so anyways.
One of my local hunting areas has the perfect spot for setting up for 500
If I do it I will bring someone along to catch it on video.
Rifle of choice will be a walnut stocked Ruger m77 mkii with a nikon 4-16 x 42 in 7mm rem mag.
I would try it with an iron sighted, custom built LRB M25/Krieger barrelled .308 but it is currently banned..... which is a total buzzkill LOL because I have killed milk jugs at 500 with that rifle in the past.

I put together a quick youtube short for this thread. I’m absolutey terrible at editing but I did my best.

How about a heart shot at 372 leaning against a power pole with a .303 and a 4x scope?
Or a heart shot at just over 400 at an extreme upward angle shooting from one knee with a 6.5WSM?

I know a guy still using the same box of 20 30-06 for 5 years that fills the freezer every fall.

In the context of the original post it's miwre about target shooting
Hey even the “Good enough” guys get lucky, all they gotta do is hit a dinner plate size target. Clearly it doesn’t take a lot of skill to do that lol.

Thanks captain obvious, I don’t think anyone realized it was a target shooting video. It’s not like Cortina is into that sort of thing, did you even watch the video?

1 moa 5” target at 500 yards is tough but several of those shots still would have been fatal kill shots, nonetheless. There are hunters out there who couldn’t consistently hit that 5” circle at 100 yards.

I agree, the title is a bit ambiguous, maybe "heart shot challenge at 500" would have been better, but he does explain it in his video I think.

Successfully making a 500 yard shot makes you a good shot not a good hunter.

A person that stalks an tracks an animal for 2 hours and takes it with a 50 yard shot in thick brush is a better hunter than someone who just sits at a field edge shooting Coyotes at 400 yards.

One is a hunter, one is a target shooter.

You skin many coyotes? Very small kill zone compared to ungulates.
Crunching a checked-up yote at 400yds in winter field conditions with adrenaline pumping takes both a good hunter and a good shooter in my opinion.

I have equal respect for a great marksman and a great hunter, but I absolutely idolize someone that is both.

So, which would I be?

I take issue with his comment as well. I called and killed 65 coyotes last year. Roughly 50/50 between the rifle and shotgun. Closest I had one was crowding 10’ and the furthest was only a head and neck in view, checked up at 385 yards. I would like to think that I’m a bit more than a little of both.

Likewise for me, a single shot Ruger #1, in a 300 H&H at 489 paces, straight through the heart. Yep, a 100 year old cartridge with a standard hunting rifle and a Harris bipod. Cortina is an idiot, regarding this matter!

No fishing story there were 18 shooters there shooting under miserable conditions in a Match sponsored by the Legion .
We have some very dedicated hunters that shoot in our matches including last year's King of two miles team winners . 🙂

So you had multiple shooters with single shot shot rifles, put 5 shots on a plate at 500 yards in 8 seconds or less? That would be impressive
