Ethics Dillemma

The only reason I'm so stuck on this on is I've already got a lot of time, study and strategy invested in this place.

Probably a bunch of other people thinking the same thing.

If it's handy to a road and you can drive in there then at least 10 other people will drive in there by noon on opening day, 10 others will see your vehicle and turn around and leave.

Wow. You don't live in Quebec that's for sure! Our whole public land is posted in one way or another with signs that might say " Hunters deer hunting 2010", etc.

You go in there and you'll get chewed out and even threatened! No one from the government even gives a crap either. One day there will be serious trouble and it's hunters which will be blamed instead of the wardens and provincial police which should be keeping public lands public and not for goons who set up permanent stands and block off road access to others.

I know a young guy who did just that and ended up with a 20ga. slug fired through the side of his brand new Tacoma. He was sure upset but as I pointed out to him, you blocked crown access. What they did was extreme, I don't condone it myself, I'd have left you a note on your windshield to tell you how ignorant you have been. Want a spot to yourself? Hunt private land that you have exclusive access to! Just my .02 worth.;)

even threatened

We have public servants with the tools to make sure that does not happen twice. I highly doubt that the RCMP would not give a crap about an armed man threatening you in the bush. If that really is a problem I'd spend half of the hunting season wandering around with no rifle and lapel camera. Next year there would be lots less idiots in the bush.
There is only one way to greet a stranger on crown land. That is with a smile, nod or a friendly wave.

As for blocking the road. It is a no no. You are just as likely blocking someone in, keeping firefighters out or at worst in BC interfering with a hunt. Stop me from accessing crown land and you'll be gaurenteed a visit from The Conservation Service. Leave a nice note and I'll wish you well from afar.

That's the sort of thing I want Saskatchewan to avoid. Once you start letting people act like they own the place, it will become standard behavior.Hey, it worked once.
The people that will use your sense of decency and sportsmanship against you will display neither of those traits themselves. Give them an inch and they will take several miles.

"...tight to the road edge..." Check your hunting regs about how far from any road you have to be. It's 8 meters in Ontario and no shooting across a roadway or the right of way.

This post is from BC not ON. And in ON that rule doesn't apply to farm roads back country logging roads etc. And although WS doesn't state it exactly it sounds like he is on an old logging road. His first post said it would scrape the paint off anything bigger than a Tracker!!! Roadway? I think not in this case!!! Good Luck with you hunt WS and let us know how yo make out!!!

If there's a truck parked on the side of the road where I know the road dosen't go very far I'll back out and give the guy some space. Block the road and I'm coming in to mess with ya.

Ok, I'm sure this has come up before, but didn't find it. I have a great hunting spot selected for opening day, LOTS of animal traffic. One problem, it's on a dead end side road of a main logging road. The road is very narrow, anything wider than a Tracker will lose paint driving down this road, trust me. The spot I want to set up is pretty much tight to the road edge, only because the other side of the road is a 150 yard long field that edges a river. Because where I need to set up is so close to the road, I'm worried that I may end up having my game spooked by another hunter driving down the road to check things out. Any suggestions on how I can protect my "honey hole"? If I park my vehicle at the trail head and walk down (about 400 yards) do you think that will be enough of a deterrent? I know the bush belongs to all of us and I respect that, but also I know there are TONNES of other decent hunting spots not so far away. The only reason I'm so stuck on this on is I've already got a lot of time, study and strategy invested in this place.

if you park at the trail head that should be a deterrent for most people.

Make sure you piss on all the trees at the trailhead to mark your territory. Scarecrows in the likeness of Ignatieff or Layton should turn off most hunters------or encourage them to alert you to their presence by shooting said effigies.

How about studying the area to determine the escape routes animals are likely to take when everyone and his dog shows up on opening day? Park your butt there, and let everyone else push bush for you.;)
