Etiquette Rant!!!!

great well then you would know in BC the law states your dog must be under your control/supervision at all times on crown land ;) NOT running around loose "aimlesly", and you would also know that it is unlawfull to interfear with a legal hunt in progress ;)

I would like to think someone screaming about anothers Etiquette would have done what they could to hold some themselves ;)

and good call there blacksmithden, enflame a already crappy situation, oh well guess it takes all kinds, but Im sure you will be nicer after you get that pigeon chucker removed from your azz ;)

My hounds are loose when I / they are pursueing game (which means they are sometime km away from me and yes it is legal.)and my birddog was always loose when i was hunting grouse (he was always within eyesight or earshot) .

As for someone enjoying the out doors with their dog running loose there is nothing that states you cant have your dog off leash on crown land its just that it cant be harrassing wildlife unless legally entitled to pursue them off leash.
Control of an animal is a pretty broad statement as a person could say that if they called thier dog and it comes it is under control etc.

one should never intentionally disrupt someones hunt(its everybodys land to enjoy) it is a classless act perpetrated by insecure people that feel the need to try to ruin someone elses day in order to make themself feel better (bully mentality) I have experianced people that purposely disrupt hound hunting and feel they are entitled to do so because they either disagree with it or are ignorant of the laws (and yes this includes other hunters) .

this particular situation seems to me as though one hunter with a dog encountered another hunter that was sitting in a tree stand , to me the situation is just one of those unintentional things and their is no need for anyone to act in a manner that is impolite or discourtious .
when you hunt public land expect to encounter other hunter and other hunting methods other then what you employ.

no harm no foul .

Bulls**t...I'll be dammed if I'm going to tie up my dog on a leash when travelling through crown land. Sounds like someone who lives in the big city argument. Threaten to shoot my dog?....lol.

I didnt read ANYWERE were the guy said ILL shoot your dog :jerkit:
and in BC your dog running lose AIMLESLY, is not aloud, I relise AIMLESLY is a big word for you but pleae look it up;)

once again the deffence for hunters Etiquette comes up shy in the inteligent department ;)

Threatening "you'll be sorry" is an a**hole thing to say. Me, I would have taken my axe and cut down his tree!
 ok there davey crockett

Barracuda, its a pretty simple fact when your hunting with you dog its obvious, your not going to let your hounds lose until you cut sign on prey, if your bird hunting you dog stays within range and in your control, what use is a bird dog that flushes game 200 yards away? I never said they werent hunting birds, again I said letting your dog run AIMLESLY

In fact "aimlessly" is even a bigger word when spelled correctly...I don't need to look it up :p;)
So what else is one to deduce from the "you'll be sorry" statement, that he's going to get a spanking or be forced to look at pictures of Rita McNeil naked?

:eek::runaway::runaway::D

Bone-collector: I can't comment on how Barracuda hunts with dogs in BC but here you don't "its a pretty simple fact when your hunting with you dog its obvious, your not going to let your hounds lose until you cut sign on prey"
 the whole purpose is to let the dogs hunt, or roam "aimlessly" with-in a set area which the dog man guides them into, to find & convince the game to move to (hopefully) a "watch" or position where one of the hunters thinks the deer will try to escape.

I had a urbanite ask me if my 25lb beagle on the back on my atv was a hunting dog, I said yes he's a crackerjack deer dog :) He said " I would never have thought that little dog could catch a deer"

1 I was refering to BC regs and stated that, in BC you must have your dogs on a leash to hunt big game (moose, deer, elk etc) bears and cats are unleashed but hunting with a fellow who has more plott hounds than my house is worth I have learned you cut sign with hounds as in fresh track or sighting of the animal, bird dogs well what good is the dam dog 300 yards away hunting birds? I did say threats are ignorant but at the same time so is complaining about those threats if your dog is a couple hundred yards away making it NOT a hunting situation at that time

some guys freecast thier dogs so they dont always look for a track to run they simply release the dogs and see what they come up with. (chances of a gong show it can be fun and productive depending on what and where they are hunting) . Other folks road thier dogs in which they are loose normally trotting in front of your vehicle about 100feet or so and if the dog strike a hot track then the race begins and others only rig thier dogs on a platform or box so the dogs to strike airborn scent or the driver comes across a set of track on the road that they want to run then they drop the dogs on the track.
I will employ all three methods depending on the circumstances and the game.

In BC you are allowed to hunt all game with dogs off leash except for ungulets ,sheep and goats (you can still use them for that but they have to be on leash) I know deerhunters dont seem to like hound/dog hunters because they feel that they are infringing on their deer hunt by haveing the dogs working the bush in thier deer sanctuary but it is reciprical and just because i dont care for deer doesnt mean that i consider it less of an endeavour or less important to the person just different.

respect others pursuits and hopefully they will respect yours.

Bone-Collector,

I think you need to re-read the first post. The guys were hunting grouse with their dog on Crown Land. I don't know of a single grouse hunter that hunts with their dog on a leash. If you've ever hunted upland game, you'd know that the dogs cast about seemingly "aimlessly" searching for scent and will then proceed to either stand and point, or flush the game, depending on the breed.

Nowhere did I read anything about hunting big game with dogs. Both hunters in question were wearing blaze orange and were out in the open. While they were headed back to their vehicle, the dog continued to hunt. They were still engaged in perfectly legal and lawful hunting activities.

The other individual, hunting from a tree stand was probably in full camo gear and obviously not easily spotted from the ground. The grouse hunters didn't know he was there until he spoke up and issued what any reasonable person would construe to be a threat to their dog.

Had the tree stand hunter spoken up earlier and identified himself, I would hazard a guess that the grouse hunters would've probably collected the dog and found another spot to hunt. I know I would've, not wanting to screw-up the other guys hunt, because he was there first. That's simple hunting ettiquette. However, this treestand hunter comes off like a proper asshat. The onus was on him to let the grouse hunters know he was in the area and to politely ask that they find another area to hunt...NOT threaten to shoot their dog, who legally had every right to be doing what he/she was doing!

Just so you know, I'm not totally unsympathetic to the treestand hunter. I've had stalks that I spent house on, crawling through bogs and tuckamores on my hand and knees, ruined by some happy-go-lucky, completely oblivious novice hunter, who didn't have the common sense God gave a beach rock. However there was no evil motives in play, just the wrong guys at the wrong time. Had they known I was engaged in an active stalk, they would've most certainly backed off. While pissed, I didn't threaten them or their dog for being there.

The same rules apply down my way during moose season. First hunters to reach a good hill or tolt gets to use it. While there is no law to keep me from joining them on said hill, common courtesy dictates that I not intrude. If I want to hunt from that tolt, I just have to get there earlier next time!

i think the guy was a putz.

if he was waiting for a deer to come by. then he isnt going to have one with you 2 and a dog trunching around near him anyhow.

Guy's hunting grouse over a dog walks by me and I'm letting him know where I am right away. Treestand ain't a safe place to be when a bird takes wing and the shotties start going.

[k lets start from the begining, I dont have a issue with dogs hunting, in fact I have probably enuff experience with it to enjoy it, my initial problem is that people get all pissy when they have an encounter with someone else in the bush, this guy is ticked the tree stand guy said call off your dog or else, well yea but at the same time admitting your standing around enjoying the day kicking the brush pile BS'in (wich is always a good time) YOUR NOT HUNTING at that moment were is fido? running around barking having a great time? doing what a dog does best? and whats the rest of the story? afterall the dog was aways away and the guy yelled call off your dog? did it growl at him? dont tell me hunting dogs arent capible of being mean, I owned labs and hounds and a couple of them if they didnt know you would rather rip you a new rearend than like you (I am not saying buddies dog did this but what is the rest of the story?)

theres always 3 sides to every story in life, my side, your side then the real truth! dont come online #####in up a storm your inocent and this guy threatened your dog for ZERO reason other than it was running around screwing up his day!

hell we could all start a rant about other hunters doing something we didnt like, last night myself and foxer got stuck behind a bridge because some putz parked his truck on it and left to chat with buddies in the creek hunting moose? so what we took another route ;)

I didn't sound like #####ing up a storm to me, the guy just told a frikin' story about something that happened to him and wanted to share it. A lot better that publicizing the stories about some goof shooting up another guy as far as I'm concerned. Lighten' up a bit...most people listen to your rants. ;)

On that note....I'm going huntin'....seeya :)

yep I agree, there's always another side to the story.
How far was the two grouse hunters from the treestand guy?
How far away was the dog? if he was a real bird dog I would think he would be ranging very close, was he?
Or was the dog standing under the tree guy barking his head off as some dogs will do!! At which point I would be annoyed too!
Still no need for threats!

When I still hunted with Irish Setters, depending on the terrain, I had the dogs range from as close as 10-15 yards, out so far as a couple hundred. I was confident in my dogs that they would hold their point until I arrived. Hunting with my Labs, which are flushing dogs, I keep them in much closer, and they are always within a gunshot, while actively hunting.

As for the treestand hunter being in danger from an aggressive or suspicious dog? C'mon, he was up a frickin' tree! If he was annoyed, all he had to do was yell out to the grouse hunters, identify himself, his location and request that they call the dog back.

I don't care how pissed off he was, you don't threaten another hunter's dog, unless it attacks you or your own dogs as they've got just as much right to be hunting on Crown Land as you do!

I've run into my share of aggressive and poorly trained hunting dogs over the past 20 years. My dogs are trained, so I don't have any worries that they're going to go aboard another hunter or their dogs. Now, my dog's have been jumped a time or two, and I've had one case where an aggressive black Lab started to make a run at me. However, in all cases my dogs quickly put the aggressor dogs in their place and sent them packing.

(I breed my hunting dogs for intelligence, temperment, nose & especially for Newfoundland's hunting conditions, which require large dogs with deep chests that can handle the cold salt water, running all day on seemingly endless bogs and barrens and have no problem dealing with sun, rain, hail, sleet & snow all in the same day and still want to keep hunting! Superior breeding and genetics gets you a dog that can kick ass and take names!:D)

I've never been one to tollerate dickheads. If he said something like "hey guys, I'm still hunting over here. Would you mind moving out a bit further" then no problem. Hell, I'd cross a swamp to be a nice guy and give him some room. A comment like the one this guy threw out would have me egging on the situation until either it got ugly or he left. That's me. Maybe I'm trying to educate the world one dickhead at a time. Here's my version of "the plain truth". Be nice to others and give them a little respect right off the bat, they'll be nice right back. If you threaten somebody right off the bat, expect to have a BIG confrontation. After he was good and steamed, I'd tell him exactly why I was ruining his day. If you throw out threats, expect a fight.
It's kind of like people driving down the road changing lanes without signalling. If I can see that someone wants to change lanes in front of me but they're not signalling, I won't back off. If it's too much trouble for them to turn on a signal, then it it DEFINATELY too much trouble for me to touch the brakes to let them in. Don't like my attitude??? Tough ####.

Just where did you get the reference to the hunter being in any danger from my post?
from this "Or was the dog standing under the tree guy barking his head off as some dogs will do!! At which point I would be annoyed too!"

"If he was annoyed, all he had to do was yell out"
I believe that is just what he did! He did not threaten the dog directly but there was absolutely no need for the attitude he used!

Sounds like the threat was to the owner. "You'll be sorry"

My nature is to get along. When dealing with ####-heads though, I have found that the only thing that works is to get confrontational and fight fire with fire. Accomadating a**holes like that only encourages them to continue.

Sounds the like the same guy that puts his moose stands up over a main trail and then get pissy everytime someone drives byon an atv.

I think I met that guy. His brother is the outfitter that puts a stand on every trail then patrols them trying to keep everyone away.
Many states are requireing tree stands to be taken down everyday, instead of hunters claiming a spot for the season or forever. People like that don't respond to "nice" or reason. They may respond to chainsaws.

I tend to agree with you but I'm not really in favor of getting confrontational when people have guns in their hands! There are some real dickheads in the world. Perhaps a better salution is to spoil the guys day by calling the cops & reporting a threat. I'm sure your hunting success rate would fall considerablly with a couple cops yelling at you from below your treestand :D

It is illegal to interfer with a lawful hunt in BC so all the tough guys with pissing and clay pigeons can kiss thier hunter number good bye if they f**k around like that.

Are you sure the hunter saw you? Or was he just yelling to see if there was an owner with the dog?

Why did'nt you just yell back "hey sorry we are out of here good luck"?

You were not hunting when your dog took off, the treestand guy was.

Your dog was not in control and was running wild. Your lucky you did not hear a bang and a whimper.

Save the anger for the golf course!
