Ever buy a handgun on hype/ glowing review and was disappointed ?

most guns have a breaking in period, usually 1k-2k rounds to smooth the action out...

also, guns are subjective, its is pretty stupid to buy something based on someone else's 'glowing review' without actually trying it

are u for for F* real? Every gun you bought you tested it before hand? I`m not that lucky, If I had to wait to try every gun before I bought it, I wouldn`t have any...lol..
I take a gamble based on reviews and if it doesn`t work out I`ll sell it. My loss is someone else`s gain. Everyone`s opinion of the perfect gun is different. This thread is about buying something without trying....like from reviews.....and have a difference of opinion afterwards.

Para.Do i need to say more.

Hehe, nope. Worst gun I ever bought. Would not work right out of the box. Went back to Para (when they were in Scarboro, Ont) for repair, and I promptly sold it. Never again.

Other gun I bought on hype was an HK USP 45. Waaay to big for my hands, and chunky. The rail on it was also a bad idea, as it was not picatinny, but a special HK rail, so accessories for it were HK, ie expensive. Sold it a long time ago.

Not a pistol, but I bought a Marlin M375 because I just had to have a lever action rifle. Put less than 50 rounds through it during load development and sold it. The thing just left me cold and I never would have carried it to hunt with. Lesson learned, lever actions aren't my thing, even if they still look great to my eye. I have a 5" Redhawk in .44 Mag that I am very happy with. As much as I wanted a 4.2" version, the 5" balances better and I think I would have been disappointed with the 4.2" if I had found one first.

For me it has been "revolvers". I still have a GP100 but only because I also have a lever gun in .357. Otherwise I'd sell it because I just have no use for it at all. I always thought that everybody should have a .357 and I even still think that...and yet I have absolutely no use for them or interest in them.

Well, if I could have a prohib it would be a J-frame with a short barrel as a "get the #### off me" gun. But I know I'd never shoot it because I just don't really care for revolvers.

umm yeah, i'm "for for F* real". noobs always ask others what they should be buying and you yourself said "Everyone`s opinion of the perfect gun is different." only way to be sure is to handle it before you put money on it or your loss will always be my gain :)

and dont give me any bs about not having any venues to try them out before buying, if your are buying a restricted (and not a collector, in which case a pic is enough to satisfy) than stands to reason you have access to a range, where people are almost always glad to let your try out their rigs. only reason to forego this is either you have enough of a budget that you dont mind going through enough buys to land on the right piece or just can't be bothered.

this thread is perfect for this cuz alot of people tell noobs asking for opinions on their first gun to actually atleast handle it if not try it - which would save them from replying here :)

...thanks for the feedback brother, so sorry to pull you into a noob thread...

... Right now, I am trying to make a life changing decision on weather to buy a Ruger SR 1911 or a Glock 21 as my first gun. Now there is a subject guaranteed to bring on debate! :p

Bought both, still own the Glock.
I have both. Love the SR1911, but the Glock? Ehh... Not so much. I think if the sights were better I'd like it better. They just seem fat, chunky, clunky or something, and I don't shoot it all that well. I think if I could get better sights on it I'd be a lot happier with it.

A google search and handling it in the store beforehand would have saved you some money. So glad I have large hands and everything fits me... great gun, just didn't fit you. HK has their own rail, but you would have known that if you did some research. Love my USP.

226 and 220 are on my "do not sell list". This goes to show you that each person must make up their mind for themselves. What works for one may not work for another. I agree with any Nork and Tokarev... I tried the Tok and it had a tiny grip and bad trigger, couldn't shoot it worth a damn. Sold it pretty quick. Bought a gorgeous 1911, going to sell it soon. My Sig 220 and S&W 645 are better for me

What exactly is wrong with the new 629's?

All most all are slightly out of time and causing the cylinder lock to engage early, resulting in peening. Not a huge deal, but a friggen piss off when you just spent $1100 on it. Sounds like most people are sending them in for warrenty work after only a few weeks. Turn around time is around 18 months....

HK P30. As nice as it is, I just wasn't quite prepared for the wonky HK trigger on it, and that's with DA/SA, not a LEM trigger. A few thousand rounds in and I'm still getting used to it. Then again, I've been spoiled by crisp Swiss triggers and a tweaked 686.

I almost bought one... glad I didn't.

For me it was Glock. Never owned a polymer framed HG and never liked the way it looked.
After owning one for about 3yrs my gen3 G17 has become one of my favorite 9mm semi-autos. I liked the Glock product enough to buy a gen4 G21. It sees all of my .45ACP ammo because I've since sold the others off. YMMV

Twice. STI Spartan never even made it to the range. Grip safety didn't work, pulled trigger with hammer in first 'notch', and it dropped. (Might have been Armco's 'famous' smoothing job). Second was a Sig 226 in 40 S&W. I've seen military rifles with better triggers. Double action pull moves the sight zero so badly, it's a total waste of a round. Single action moves the sight zero as bad as a lot of DA revolvers.

Norinco 1911A1C. It's been reliable sure but can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn with it. While it may partially be my technique the shots seem infinitely variable and @ 25 yards I'm getting 1.5' to 2' groups. I would be happy if there was consistency and I could get all of the shots on a target from a single mag. I grab my SP-01 Shadow and my groupings are all consistent. The norinco 1911 targets look like a roulette wheel of random hits. Disappointed because all the reviews said it was under rated and that people should try it out. I'm over it. Ready to sell it soon. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a $350 gun with a 4.25" barrel at 25 yards. My shadow has spoiled me.

Sig P226

Tons of hype with this pistol, I HATED it. I can pretty much shoot anything, fairly decently. But that sig, I really didn't like. Everything felt wrong about it
I didn't like the grip angle, heavy trigger etc.

I always HATED glocks with a passion and swore I'd never own a tupperware gun. Well one day in a moment of weakness, likely jonesing for a firearms fix
I bought a new gen3 G17, at first I kinda liked it and once I started using the squishy trigger to my advantage, I was shooting it unbelievably well.

Try everything you can!

I hated glocks, now love them. Though I don't own any anymore. Bigger and better things!

(Caught the 1911 plague)

Another hyped pistol I've longer for but haven't got yet is the HK Mark 5 SOCOM .45acp Don't know why but that gun does it for me!

Other than groping cool guns at the store whenever I can - I have bought almost all of my guns without trying them out. I don't see many guys at the range with cool handguns or black rifles.

I mostly buy guns because they were cool in movies.

My biggest letdown was the issc Mk22 that FTFs now and again and feels like a lot of plastic for not much gun. I wanted it cause it looked cool and I could not get an ACR or SCAR. Now I have an ACR and likely won't shoot the Mk22 again.

I got a para 14.45 cause I loved the look, have big hands and like the ten round magazine. It is a bit picky but is a riot to shoot. My biggest issue is I am bad a cleaning it and have gotten the Recoil spring plug in the forehead a few times (safety glasses on).

I had the opposite experience with a sig. I disliked all the hype and didn't know how it could be cooler than my beretta 92f that I love (cause of Die Hard). I ended up buying the sig 226 extreme just to prove I would not like it as much (and because I wanted to buy a new gun and it was at cabellas). It was far ###ier than I could have imagined and is now my favorite pistol. The extreme model has an improved trigger that might be why I like it though. I have never shot any other sigs to compair.
