extraction problem with butler creek barrel on 10/22

I have a stainless, heavy barrel 10/22 that is a great shooter.......but the darn thing isn't fun to carry around. So I bought a butler creek carbon fiber barrel of the same diameter and assembled it as per the manufacturers instructions. WHAT A DIFFERENCE !! The rifle feels and handles like a wand and, I am happy to report, is almost as accurate as with the Ruger barrel.

However there is a problem with the extraction, not while firing but if you want remove a live round from the chamber, the extractor won't always pluck that round out. Often I just remove the magazine and fire the chambered round. How do I fix this? I called butler creek and may I report they were no help whatsoever. The knob on the phone said the extractor needed tuning and to take it to a qualified gunsmith. Gee, thanks bud!

Anyone here know how to fix this problem?!?

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. The extractor is not designed to extract a live round, especially from a 'semi-match' chamber.

The VQ extractor will PROBABLY help in extracting live round, but again it's not designed to do so.

I have the same situation. A modified/improved extractor doesnt help. THe chamber is a very snug fit, and the bullet actually contacts the comencement of rifling when fuling chambered.

That means that while the barrel is a very accurate tool, you should remember to only load what you plan to shoot.

I have the problem only intermittently though. A rim thickness guage would help take care of our problem too. I am just too cheap to not use all my ammo.

AFAIK the only purpose of the extractor in the 10/22 is to extract live rounds. As the rifle uses a blowback action, spent shells are ejected by a protrusion on the lips of the magazine. To the OP www.hawktecharms.com sells VQ extractors and will ship to Canada.

Thanks for the parts source Gabe! It is like that old saying "you can't do one thing".....the ripple effect as it applies to firearms:rolleyes: Now I can't wait to get home and try firing a round without the magazine in place to see if it ejects the same way or if the spent round just falls out of the mag well.

And like I said in my OP, the extractor worked fine with the Ruger barrel, which has a match chamber, but not the Butler Creek carbon fiber match barrel with a Bentz chamber.
