Hi there, hope someone may be able to help...

Got a new rifle, was very pleased with the condition with it when i got it, and after stripping her down and cleaning was even more impressed, it was almost unfired, borel bright and shinny plenty of rifling and the gas cylinder was the same.

Anyways put it back together and load a couple of dummy rounds for a test.

F&$% it didnt extract, tried again and again and again. Stripped the bolt replaced all internals and tried again - still nothing F$%$

So i am guessing i have a headspace problem as the extractor is not fully engaing the rim of the dummy round, as if i push it from the barrel using a cleaning rod i hear the shell engage.

So i guess i have the following questions for all the experts:

1. Is it a headpace issue ?
2. Should i fire the weapon to see if it extracts ?
3. How do i fix it :(
4. What instructions do i give to a gunsmith to fix it (we have limited gunsmiths here and most would know nothing of m14's)

And i guess before i turn it into an expensive parts gun, i should say it is a USGI H&R M14. :runaway:

Thanks in advance

Cripes!! don't turn her into a parts gun yet!! errr, on second thought, nah, she's no good at all, mail her to me for disposal!:dancingbanana: Failing that, is your extractor spring there and working? If the case isn't extracting at all, thats going to be your culprit. If she's so far out of headspace that the claw won't engage the rim she'd not fire in the first place, or if she did, she dissassemble herself in a very rapid manner you wouldn't enjoy. Send a pm to Hungry, and maybe post a pic of the bolt face side of bolt, and maybe one from the right side of the reciver showing the bolt closed on a dummy round or fired case. (you could use a live one, but I'm not gonna tell you to in your living room  ) This will give the brain trust around here (Not Me!) more information to work with.

Well, i think i have narrowed it down a little, if i remove the ejector from the bolt the extractor graps the shell and pulls it out. If i put the ejector back in same problem the extractor cannot grap it.

Anyone heard of any issues with ejectors before ?

And i tested with a live round (minus the firing pin in the bolt) with no difference. Am going to order some headspace gauges so i can make sure it is still safe to shoot.

Sounds like you have a very large chamber there.

I have never run across this kind of problem before. I am out of my area of competence to advise.

Nope, don't start cutting any coils off the ejector spring.

I don't mind measuring 5 fired cases for you like we have done in the past. Sounds to me like a very generous chamber....

Hope this helps,
Barney

Are you easing the bolt forward, or are you allowing the bolt to return to battery after pulling back the op rod and letting it fly forward under it's own power?

With a round in the magazine, and the bolt locked to the rear, will the extractor grab the case rim if you press the bolt stop and allow the bolt to go forward?

Yep pull her back and let her go, interesting i notice if i dry fire this will sometimes force the extractor over the round, and it extracts.

Most frustrating

Is there anything jammed in the bottom of the spring pocket for the ejector? Like a piece of broken spring or dirt/grease? Still, It sounds like you may have a loose chamber. Mail Hungry a fired case, he can measure it and tell you if thats the problem, or find a set of go/no go headspace gauges. If it closes on the No go, your chamber is long. Being as this is an american M-14, could the throat be eroded enough from fireing to lengthen the chamber?
