Eye Surgery

My GF got done - not Lazik but the more expensive one
She could not see w/o glasses before - now she has some halo'ing at night while driving but still has a semblence of NV.
And she does not need the worthless CF glasses under her gas mask now...

I keep hearing about eye surgery and am very tempted to get it done for all the above reasons.
1. Fingers in eye are a not in a chance of hell, aka no contacts.
2. Worried about side effects (night vision, haloes)

What versions of corrective eye surgery are there? And what does each version entail?
I loathe the idea of anyone, even a doctor cutting into my precious eyeballs, especially when I can see them doing it. (No sir, I want to be put out.)

Can anyone elaborate on the current process/versions used and the relative cost factor for both eyes? I have read Lazik throughout this thread and with the testimonials of you guys, I'm seriously thinking of it.

My eyes however are not too bad.
OD -2.00 -0.75 130
OS -2.00 -1.25 020

I have several sets of glasses at my current perscription (Thank god for benefits @ work).

My wants for getting it are very selfish as I'm not even close to being legally blind.
1. I want my peripheral vision back (Paintball sucks when you cannot see movement acutely from your sides).
2. No more glasses.

Sigh.... I just want info. So if any of you know of specialists in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge (Ontario) vicinity, or better yet recommend them, please let me know via a PM. Thanks a bunch.

From what I've heard so far though, I guess I won't be getting my Unica-6 anytime soon then

I had PRK done in 1996 at London Eye Centre in New Westminster. My correction was roughly -2.75 and -3 beforehand.

My uncorrected binocular vision is 6/3 (20/10). It was uncomfortable for a couple of days afterwards and I was light sensitive for 24 hours following, but There is NOTHING I can even remotely criticize about the procedure.3 days after I had it done, my corrective lens restriction was removed from my drivers license. 10 years and into my 40's I still have spectacular vision. I was offered sedation at the time, but it isn't needed. I had topical freezing and that was all I needed for the process.

I got my right eye done in February, by PRK technique at Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary. I am planning on having the other one done as well, because this one was so incredibly good. I have no haloing at all at night, my vision is significantly better than 20/20 and I love it! Gimbel uses the latest wavefront analysis to map out exactly how much to zap, and my results show the benefits. How good is my resolution? I can see the scoring lines of a B-27 sihlouette target from 25 yards!

100% worth the price tag (About as much for one eye as a nice used handgun) to get zapped!

You have to be awake. They do give you the valium. It's very nice stuff :D Don't get LASIK (Flap & Zap) - get PRK. LASIK has a risk of the flap coming loose even a long time after the surgery and hurting like a MOFO if subjected to heavy impacts (like recoil) Depending on how much you shoot, you may not be a candidate for that proceedure, I wasn't. The laser they use is an invisible light laser, it makes a snapping sound and you smell something like burning hair. It took 14.3 seconds to do mine. very quick, then they put in a bandage contact lens, you go get your prescriptions filled, and all is well. Then you go back for followup appointments to see how you are healing up, for 3 months. I still need eyedrops from time to time, but only if I am dehydrated.

I had my eyes burned back in '97 and it was the best cash I have ever spent in and on my life.

I had the LASIK done and my eyes were BAD! Like, they thought it would take two treatments bad but my surgeon was so skilled he got it all done in one go. To give you an idea I was -13.5 right eye, -9.75 left eye. I couldn't see ****. In less than 24 hours, I was just a hair under driving quality. And, my eyes continued to get stronger over the next 3 years, I have no loss of night vision, no haloing effect, and no complications. I paid for my buddy to get his eyes done and they are now both 20/15.

If you are elligible for the LASIK, I would recommend it over the PRK method any day. Reason being is that with the PRK they burn the epithereal layer off the eye and when it grows back, it can be quite painful and is a higher risk to infections. With the LASIK, your healing area is a small crecent shaped cut. The most discomfort I felt was that of an eyelash in my eye - that's it.

Yes, there is a risk of moving the flap while its healing but if you don't rub or get hit in the eye, you won't have an issue. Even if it becomes dislodged, the surgeon can replace it quite easily.

The most important advice I can give though is DO YOUR RESEARCH! Base your decision on the surgeon's record and not the $$$. I paid more for my eyes but the guy who did it invented the LASIK procedure and is world renowned. There are a lot of low budget places out there but you onl;y have 1 set of eyes to work with - don't skimp out.

K9, if that's you then, are you back in Van yet? Or still in KAF?
Have you had any problems with your eyes in low light situations? Using NVG's ok? night silouhettes ok? Depth perception at night is ok?

Hey man!

Yeah, its me. Still here in the world's largest litter box... but not for much longer!

I have had absolutley ZERO issues with seeing in low light, use of NVG's, or darkness at all. That is to say tha I am no worse off then I was before really. If anything, I think it became a bit better for me. Never had one day of complications at all.

I'll be home soon and more than likely will be over in your neck of the woods on leave at some point. We should tee up sometime bud - its good t ohear from you again.

Saryet. stay safe. winter (our fav vietnamese sgt) was over 2 weeks ago, and we had a blast (the whole regt was over). when ever you're back, and want to come over, hit me up on msn.

Sorry to re-jack this thread, but I thought you might like to hear how my surgery went. 5 days after, and I'm seeing 20/15 in one eye(!), and 20/40 in the other. Sadly, they undercorrected one eye and will have to give it a "touch up". Still, I can see more or less normally without correction, and it is wonderful, and worth every penny. My night vision is fine-no better or worse than before the operation. The peepers are a little itchy, and require lots of drops, but its no inconvenience. Goodbye glasses!

I had it done about six weeks ago and it has been a complete success. My vision has gone from 20/100 to 20/15, greater than 20/20! My night vision is also much better now that the halo's have dissapeared. I spotted a wild rabbit in the dark on somebodies lawn the other nite about forty feet away.

I found it a bit nerve racking but they gave me a valium and a back massage before surgery. I definitly reccomend for anyone who can afford it.

Any of you guys out there have just one eye? Not kidding here, I have a lazy eye, which is essentially useless, and my good eye has hit the near 50 sickness. I'm presently trying a bifocal contact, but don't know if that will work. Up to the last couple of years, I have had perfect sight, even if it was in just one eye! I've thought about the lazer surgery but I've got a lot to lose here. If anything should go wrong...Guess my shooting days would be over, not good. Wonder if anyone else is in the same boat?

I'm going under the laser December 7th. Not really anticipating the days after it but it'll be nice to be able to see once again.

I have "larger than average" pupils so my cost was doubled  But they're a business and I have the choice to take my money and go home.

I might actually have to buy a couple of handguns as I might enjoy shooting them once again (shooting at a blur isn't very entertaing).

They're trying to offer insurance for $400 or so more, I'm guessing that insurance isn't should it not go right the first time

A month on and my eyes are great! 20/20 in the troublesome left eye, which just took a little longer to adjust, and 20/15 in the right eye. I know most others agree when I say that it was the best money I've ever spent(although an MG34 would have been nice), and would have been a bargain at twice the price. Armament, don't worry about a thing, they will take good care of you. I have large pupils too, which upped the cost, but it worked out great. As for insurance, the place I visited included all visits and any touchups within a year in the original price. If you're around $2500 an eye all in, I'd say you're doing about right.

Too chicken to risk my eyesight. Too many mental images like:

So I'll wait for:

Anyone with personal experience with laser eye surgery? I would be interested in getting some info with respect to how it affected your shooting abilities,, either pro or con.

Hey, I had no touch laser surgery done apx 6 years ago now, i was 16 at the time well below the age they prefer, however my perscription was -18in my left eye and -16 my my right. i couldent see with out glasses or contacts. at 16 i got the surgery done, right after surgery my vision was -1 in the right eye and -1.5 in the left.

It took about 3 weeks to heal fully for me, but i was an extreem case so healing time for somone with a light prescription should be way less. now ff 6 years later my vision has leveled off at apx -1.5 in my right and -2 in my left it wont stay that way forever but it will allso never be as bad as it was before. once it gets to bad ill go in for a touch up, wich is free for me.

i wasnt a shooter before my surgery so i cant comment on the differance regarding shooting. however it made such a huge differance in every other aspect of my life that i wouldnt hesitate for a moment to do it again.

If you have any questiong please feel free to pm me and ill be happy to answer any questions you have.
