I leaning to 223, 270 Winchester... and either 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag....have all of the above already...have a 7mm Weatherby too
and a couple 7mm STW's...but factory ammo is very limited for these two.....

I agree 100% Rembo. I was really surprised as I read through the pages that the .270 wasn't mentioned much. Personally I'd steer toward the 300 win mag more so than the 7mm mag, but that's just more due to the old way of thinking of the heavier bullet options. Although they're not needed with good bullet construction like one of the bonded bullets, or a tsx/ttsx. As you've stated, factory ammo can be hard to come by in some of the other rounds, that's why I'd choose these nearly generic chamberings. Living close to a bigger center a person will have more choices, but living in rural areas factory ammo options become limited quite quickly. Or just go with a 223, and a 7mm mag, and call it done.:D

You only have to buy one gun and can use the extra money on the expensive gopher hunting!

The 30-06 has it all! Ammo in every store that sells ammo, at prices less than the magnums.

Exactly what I think, well said. Then again magnums are so vogue. :runaway:

Anyway, the question was "what would you pick?", there is no right and wrong.
 
.223 for gophers, coyotes, etc.
.270 for deer, caribou, sheep, etc.
.338WM for elk, moose, bison, etc.
Factory ammo in a variety of bullet choices for all three available pretty much anywhere.
