factory ammo

Well, being as I wouldn't plan on eating the gophers, here's my list:

1. From Gophers to Wolves -- 30-06
2. From Deer to Black Bear -- 30-06
3. From Elk to Moose -- you guessed it -- 30-06.

Spend less of rifles and more on hunting all of the above. ;)

.223 or .22-250

a light weight 270win or 308win for deer & mountain game

.35 whelen or .338mag for the big stuff

would seem to cover NA game nicely with a little overlap...

I can just imagine you guys shooting 100 rounds in an afternoon at gophers with 7-08's and 30-06's....with three cartridges on the list the 223 is a no-brainer....a fast middle weight, say 120 to 150 grains, the 25-06, one of the 270's or a fast 7mm, ie: 280, 7 Mag . 7 short mag(pick one) and a big 30 or 338 to round out the top end....

Sheesh, what's this factory ammo stuff? If the NDP or Lieberals get in, we won't have factory ammo or components or shootin' irons either.........

Rembo if you are going to dump your reloading stuff let me know, OK? I would probably give you a hundred bucks or maybe even more for all of it, plus a hundred bucks each for your complete centrefire rifles, another twenty each if they are scoped.

You know what the sad thing is? Two of the three cartridges that make the most sense for Canadian hunters are boring........those being .223 and .30-06. So the middling cartridge (yes, probably .270 Win), or the big boomer (hard call, but again probably .338 Win Mag) are the only real alternatives.

PERSONALLY:

.222 Rem

.308 Win

.375 H&H

Ammo for the first and third can be hard to find in small towns...........

back to SC...............maybe sensible, maybe not..........;)

Personally, I would consider myself under-gunned with a .270 for large and/or dangerous game. I am thinking of the big bears and bison in particular. And I do have this military background ("ALWAYS use a sledgehammer to kill a fly"), so I personally would choose a larger calibre and a heavier bullet for moose and elk as well.

And back to Why Not...........well, it happens to the best of us, this sensible stuff. But I try to avoid it mostly, just like our buddy Phil! :p

He and I are heading up to the range after supper tonight. He wants to check the sighting on that sensible 300 Wby you gave him when he moved out here! :D

What a beast!!!!!
Ted

Ted, it would have been un-Christian to allow Phil to go hunting in the Yukon with his .30-30................;)

Sorry for the hi-jack Rembo...........

...........and how about that .30-30 anyways!!!!! :p Not too many people picked it yet.
