Just for the sake of discussion let's say you wanted to have 3 centerfire bolt actions for everything from gophers to moose/elk all shooting factory ammo...which 3 cartridges would you pick?

.223

7mm-08

.300 Win Mag

Only 'cause I already have 'em all.

NAA.

hmmm...I see two guys have picked two 30 calibers in the same class..

308 & 30-06....

30'06 & 300 Mag....

strange.....

This just points out that only two calibres are required. A 223 and one of the following.
308/30-06/300 mag/338.
The post mentioned factory ammunition.
308 is limited in heavier weight bullets.
The 30-06 has it all! Ammo in every store that sells ammo, at prices less than the magnums.
Excellent choice of bullet weghts.
One hundred years of proof that it is entirely suitable for the large game mentioned.
Why go any further?

I see lots of guys like that. 10 different big game rifles...chambered in . 270, 30-30, ,303, 308, 30-06, 300 Savage, 7RM and .308 Norma
:p:p

I know what you mean...I have local guy who wants me to help him pick a 300WSM......to go with his two 300 Win Mags and his 30-378.........
4 different 30 cal magnums.......you have to wonder....
I suggested a 270WSM.......he laughed....

just remember that the word "magnum" is a license to STEAL- roughly double the price of a standard 30, eats one heck of a lot more powder and a heavier gun all around, and only 3 shots- that's why my go-t0 is a 308, and the 338 sits mostly at the back of the safe

Never did understand that. When I'm loading my own, the powder is second lowest expense, next to the primer. Yet Factory magnum ammo, with 70 grains powder, costs double Factory ammo with 50 grains powder, and the same bullet and primer, just a slightly larger case.

I'd stick with what I already have (that I load for, but anyway)

22-250
300WM

and I'd add in something in the middle,

6.5x55

Or- "I mostly hunt with my 308, but when I go for moose and really want to knock them down, I use my 3006!"
