Hi,

I'd like to know if factory crimp dies also complete the bullet seating process?

I have a set of 3 RCBS .40 S&W dies and am wondering if I can replace the last die (bullet seat/taper crimper).

The reason is that my barrel doesn't seem to like the regular taper crimp and had a hell of a time getting a round out of the barrel:redface:

From what I've been reading about the factory crimp and from what I saw in some videos, the factory crimp should let the round slide easily in and out of to the barrel...saving me another trip to the gunsmith.

If this is the case (and I'll just thow it out to save time...I'll also post in EE of course)...anyone want to get rid of a carbide one in .40 S&W or .45acp?

Factory Crimp dies are mainly to crimp your rounds and not designed to seat your projectiles. I use Lee FCD to crimp my rounds and further resize my finished loaded rounds that has gone thru the resizing die. The Lee FCD is designed to crimp your loaded rounds and further resize them up to the base or full length of the brass.

To answer your question, the answer is NO. FCD is not a substitute for seating die. In order to use the FCD, you will need another station in your progressive press to facilitate the FCD for further crimping. Your press should have 4-die station to use FCD. :)

Hope this helps.

BTW, if you are going to use the FCD for 9mm rounds intended for semi-auto handgun, remember not to get the "roll crimp" crimp die. You need the "TAPER" crimp die.

Good luck and load safely :)
