Factory "Gentleman's rifle" - if there is such a thing

6995 pounds converts to approx 11,000 cdn. It's about the same price as the original mausers.

Calgary Shooting Centre has them for $12,250 I believe.
They're gorgeous, point well and are beautifully made, but really need an ebony cap on the end of the fore end.
If I had the cash, I'd definitely consider one - especially with some colour case hardening, but in the mean time I will settle for my Ruger African in 6.5x55.

The image of a Gentleman in a suit with a Rigby pales in comparison to the image of a common man in a muddy uniform with a Lee Enfield.

That same gentleman was as likely to serve in WW1 as not and trade the Rigby for a Webley. British officers were 50% more likely to be killed in action than an enlisted soldier. Fully 20% of the Eton students who served as officers were killed, almost twice the casualty rate within the ranks.

I'd tend to lean towards a falling block platform for developing a smallbore battery. 1 small caliber in 22 or 243 bore, a medium in 6.5 or 7mm and a bigger bore in say a 375R, all rimmed cartridges . If I went bolt action, same except change to rimless non-belted cartridges and go to a 40cal for the bigger one, 404 or 416. Rigby, Heym, H&H, Purdey, Mauser, Steyr, Haenel, Merkel, Brno, were all big names in the heyday of the "gentleman's" guns say, 1890 to 1939. Don't doubt there were some good Liege and French gunmakers in those days, haven't looked into them too much though.
You'd have to have a double in 450-400 or a 475 of some form. And a set of double shotguns in 12, 16 or 20, 24 or 28ga. And you probably would need a Rook rifle of some form for around the yard or the farm.

I’m a little disturbed... you’ve clearly been in my gun room and I don’t know you.

Jim Corbett had it right. A Jeffries 450/400 double and a 275 rigby Mauser.

I have a well read copy of “The Man-Eaters of Kumaon” flying around in the work machine as we speak.

Ohh i believe they have been. And i wasnt trying to offend you at all. But now that you mention it, what else could a recoil pad do that a solid butt plate couldnt, other then soak up some recoil?

And yes. Single trigger on a double rifle for sure. The one i have in the works is a single trigger. Ardent's posts have shifted my whole collection. It went from mill surplus to big bore hunting rifles with character and class.

Keeps it leaning in a corner instead of slipping and beating your scope all to hell on the ceramic tile floor!

I figure a few of mine would fall into a gentlemanly category

Looks like belted magnum rounds in that box.

That 6.5cm is gorgeous. I wish they did something different with the mag well, but man those are handsome.
