Failed cartridges....

Whenever a new cartridge comes out, there seems to be a fair amount of nay sayers that say "better stock up on brass, it won't be around for long"

I heard this abotu the RUM's, the SAUM's, the WSM's, the WSSM;s, the 204 Ruger, the 480 Ruger, the 17HMR..gawd knows what else...Sometimes the predicitons were accurate, sometimes not.

The WSM's are more popular than ever. The 204 seems to be growing a following, the RUMs dont' appear to be going anywhere soon...

What cartridges, introduced in lets say the last 10 years, have actually failed miserably?

The only ones I can think of are the Remington SAUM series. Even though they were good cartridges, they came out on the heels of the WSM, and they had just a teeny bit less velocity.

The .338 and .375 Ultra's are a dying breed. The .17 HM2 as far as I'm concerned will be gone, say what you want. I don't remember when the .260 Rem was legitimized, but it never did too good. Though it is still breathing. The WSSM's aren't too healthy either, particularly the .25. Had it been the .257 WSM, it would have been more popular. Other than that, I think that takes care of the last decade. How about rifles? I've got the last real Winchester catalouge. too bad they didn't last. Or the 710. too bad it did. :p

The 270 and 300wsm are selling well but the 7mmwsm is far from popular. The 300ultramag is selling well, but the 375 ultramag is not selling well at all.

You need to buy a copy of cartridges of the world :p
The last ten years hasn't really been as hectic as the last few, but there have been a goodly number that many of the hunting forum types likely never heard of. A wide range of cartridges, from caseless, to shotgun handgun etc. even moreso when you look at bullet designs, loads etc.
Some of the new ones will indeed fail, but remember that Remington for example carried on making 8mm Rem Mag long after it was dead. Likewise Winchester with the 30-30

We could ask "why" a cartridge fails, too.

In the case of the 375 RUM, I woudl immediatley blame recoil and cost- hunters not needing the extra velocity in a larger bore cartrdige.

It's a no brainer that cartridges in the 7mm/30 caliber diameters are going to outsell the larger ones., too! :)

I thougth I woudl focus on the last 10 years simply because before about 10 or 12 years ago- We didn't have internet chat forums to talk about guns and allow peopel to make public comments about stocking up on brass!

Not too many. I'd agree the saum's are on thin ice. Maybe some of cartridges with 'super' in their name. Actually I can't think of any that have introduced in that time frame that you can not get brass and dies for albeit special order in some cases.

And another thing to ponder, there's been quite a few "doomed" cartridges that had been discontinued reintroduced by the ammo makers. 358 winchester, 35 Whelen. 9.3x62 come to mind..

Actually that's the 376 Steyr mon ami, Hornaday still makes brass and maybe ammo too  But I understand your slight error SC, it never was much of a pump gun cartridge. :p
376 Steyr ......... Happy now? :D

And you're probably right about the pumpgun thing. That's how come I know how to spell W-H-E-L-E-N properly :D

Anything Dosing supports
No bitterness there :p

Indeed the Etronix were a failure, as was Voere's 556 round, the 9,3X66 sako has hardly scorched the earth, or the 460 steyr, a whack of Asquare rounds, the Imperial Magnum line, 5mm Rem, 307, 7-30 waters blah blah blah.
The problem has often been down to one company going it alone, with no real support from others. I think a good whack of the 'new magnums' are destined for the trash heap, cuz thats where they belong. They simply offer nothing of merit over existing rounds. The 300WM will outlast most of them. The 204 Ruger, maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it, especially since they don't have an ammo wing to keep squeezing them out 10 years from now like a Rem or Olin would have.

Frankly I hope the 338 Fed does well, I'm thinking that or 7,62X39 will be my next bolt rifle later this year.

Don't ever forget the 284 win! remember when it too was a Doomed cartridge? Its still around and was the original "short Magnum"!!!! I still shoot it in a 98 mauser and it will give the same ballistics as a 7mm mag. Damn fine !!! JITC

To bad for 7mmwsm as it is the best of the three, watch what the F class do with it this year
