FAL in Libya

Don't think so.
The FN's and mags in the pics seem brand squeaking showroom new (the one without the handguard has a little aging on it, new mag). This is a picture of a real soldier:

Note that the rifle looks used, unlike in the previous pics.
The Libyans are in the desert. Without water bottles or any sign of belt kit. Not a scratch on a rifle or mag. They are just guys posing with brand new unfired guns for the camera.

Sharia law really? Are you on the ground there or are you listening to the people or are you following the sensational american news broadcasters spouting BS on how Libya is going to turn into the next Afghanistan?

People don't just rise up and fight there government for no reason god only knows the terrible things hes done to his own people!

Let's not forget the Air Defense Professionals. The free (Sharia Law) world can sleep soundly tonight with these stout fellows on the job. Nothing says "tactical" like walking around with the carrying handle up.

Wow. I had to sit down after reading this. Apparently I cannot laugh my ass off standing up.

Doesn't mean that they haven't been in the country since the '60s, which was my point. Canada has war production Inglis Hi-powers still in the grease.

LOL. These Libyan rebels are as amusing as the clowns in the AK in Africa thread.

LOL. Seems that everyone has some sort of political opinion about the FAL in LIBYA. FAIL.

The rifle is alive in well (and in use) around the world. Metric or Inch (Inch is better ;) .. doesnt really matter to Canadians anymore.
Some Great images from the press...

Could be. They do look like exactly like these things http://www.dsarms.com/images/SA58STD.gif with wooden rear ends.
Of course Libya could have ordered a big batch of wood/nylon FAL variants and never used them, while continuing to use full wooden furniture FAL'S.

But, never bring a machete to a gunfight:

In the 1980's there was a LOT of FAL brand new FAL rifles in the hands of Lebanese fighters in Beirut during the civil war there. I believe they were initially delivered to the Christian Militias there. It is VERY likely that the same source helped provide for rifles in Libya. Some might even be the same rifles.

Conventional wisdom states that short lightweight handy rifles like the M-4 and Tavor are the only favorites for urban fighting, but in Beirut many really prefered the FAL because of it's clear 1 shot kills, and ability to bust through brick walls sometimes. And yes, they had AKM's in plentiful numbers.

An observation: is it just me, or do the FALs in these pictures all appear to be showroom new ? The difference is rather stark when other small arms in these pictures are compared. Did the rebels just raid an arsenal and the press just happened to be in in the vicinity with cameras ? Dang, I want thier "surplus" FALs if they all look like that :p

One of the drivers for the company I worked for there had an older beat up one that showed up when things went sideways there and a few AK's as well but things were a little too tense to try to play with one in the desert...
