Really cool , I would love to get down to that neck of the woods and take a nice Fallow buck one of these days. Always wanted a nice one.

Very cool...they have to be one of the most exciting animals to hunt in the rut. They have some very interesting breeding habits...the male actually establishes a lek and the females come to him. If a male is killed in a prime lek, another will quickly take it over. Mortality from fighting between males is incredibly high.

I had shot a buck 2 weeks prior to this hunt, its in my area for fallow an i go to it every year since i discovered the little honey pot it is..
I know many of the stags thanks to trail cams prior to the rut, not all of course but thru hunting it religiously 2 weeks prior to the peak rut an generally only a week or so in the rut, as it makes it alot easier when they are vocal like that, an are generally busted up in the tips due to fighting.

We dont need tags like you guys, not for most species anyway, but a Deer hunting permit is a must, which allows you to go anywhere within State forest / Crown land an shoot as many deer as you feel fit for 1 or 3 years, We are real lucky in Victoria.

I think he will have good potential to grow to somethin decent for the area if he can get 2 more heads under his belt, i noticed a few bucks will need a year or two, although its not a bad thing as i generally help a mate or two out an get them nice stags.

Now days about Quality over quantity an try respect my little heard in the hills.

the rest of the year is sambar, an if it looks pretty big shoot it. cos ya proberly will not see that same deer again.

That is an interesting licence system for sure. They must be pretty abundant!

Great video man, I'd love to get out to one of the state parks in Vic for a hunt while I'm living in Melbourne but the Aussie government sure makes it a lot harder then it was for me in NZ! Which species of deer can be found in Vic other then Fallow and Sambar?

South Aus has alot of Fallow, really good heads too, Also Red Deer. Theres a few game parks over that way too, with every species of deer, in a big high fenced property...

Mate Victoria has Reds, Fallow, Sambar, Hog, but i wouldnt be suprised if Chital an Rusa are roaming due to escapees here or there.

The gun license isnt easy to get, which is good, but aslong as you have a Firearms license its really, really easy to get permissions for deer hunting in the state forests of vic!

although there is new deer permits for visitors so its prety accesable by all

Yeah, I've been looking into it and if I had of just come over for a holiday then it would have been easy enough to bring my own rifle and get what would essentially be a tourist's license for a firearm then get a hunting license. As it stands, I'm on working holiday visa so I don't think I even qualify for a firearms license and I've never shot a bow during the hunt... Looks like I'm out of the game in this country.
