FAMAE coming to the USA

If you check out our thread on this you can see the production process at FAMAE. There is no US involvement in this project. Furthermore, the US cost for a standard production military gun is $2850US, ours are specifically made for the Canadian market and the cost is similar. Sorry nobody is getting rich quick and FAMAE charges what FAMAE charges; they don't really care what anyone on CGN thinks the price should be.

Nor do I care what they perceive the value of their gun to be. Until its here and the quality proves to be comparable to US (and Swiss, and Israeli) made firearms of similar value, the price seems out to lunch.

As someone from South America who knows the costs of living in such countries I will have to ask you where are you getting this information from?
You are thinking from a North American mind set and while wages are probably lower than North America, cost of living is the same or sometimes more expensive than North America. Your math is not correct.

With that being said,I would like to add: I am pretty confident that the quality and materials used on this firearms are probably of a VERY good quality in order to compete with other local brands at lower prices. Cost will have to justify an amazing piece. It does not make any sense otherwise.

It is hard enough for a South American company to get into a different market. The fact that they will be offered to a market of a few million people is a big deal for them. Chile is a very small country. This could make a difference for them, how they make it is up to them. I hope they do a good job! Those SAFs look amazing.

The middle men and importers are no doubt gonna make an absolute killing on these things. I tried to find prices for these guns in South America but it seems impossible.

If Canadian dealers are gonna sell for $2900, and they're buying from a US distributor, that guy is most likely paying $1200-1500 per gun tops… which in my mind is probably what they should be worth to begin with, considering their origin. How is it possible that we can buy Made in the USA ACRs, ARs, XCRs, and Tavors for the same amount? Someone is raking in the cash on this import… wages in Chile are a fraction of ours.

The quality of the materials is not in question, The quality of the workmanship is what is lacking at least on the SAF I owned and a few others I have handled.

How much do the .308 magazines cost to produce? Considering they must have had to produce heaps of them to compliment the already existing line of service rifles. 100$?

Well they will retail for $150 or so in Canada.

Cost of production.... Who knows but if it cost them$100 to stamp out thousands of mags they are doing something wrong.

I would agree from what I have seen. I looked at a couple SAF that were on sale for $1800. Very tempting. But it clearly wasn't even a distant second in finish to my Swiss rifle. It looked like stuff was welded and then spray bombed. It was very noticeable and definately detracted from the firearm. If it had been even close to Swiss quality I know I would have been weak.

One other point. These are cool firearms but I hope the expectations for the 308 are realistic. I would be expecting battle rifle accuracy. IE M14 non worked on accuracy. It's basically a FN FAL replacement rifle. Only with perhaps Norinco finish.

I'll have to see when the 308 rifles hit the shelves. But from what I've seen the price seems fairly high for the lack of finish on them. I'm sure they will work well but I was a bit surprised by the finish. When I have a Swiss sitting in my safe it makes it even more obvious. Still tempting but there are some things to consider. I don't see the US market being particularly kind to the price and finish of these products.

^ That's the kinda stuff I've been reading which makes me weary of the pricetag.

I've been really happy with my Mini SAF. Build quality is very good. Finish is not as good, but still acceptable. Reliability has been excellent. If the fact that these will be available in the US means that I'll be able to get more mags, then I hope if works out! Four pinned 5-rounders is just not enough.

I am very happy with my SAF, no FTF or FTE ever. The only problems I have are the foreend has some play in it and the nut holding the folding stock tends to work loose after 100-200 rounds. Other than those minor issues, its a real work horse.
