Farm Rifle

22 hornet is great . hits skunks hard . coyotes at 200 yards no problem if you have a steady hand and keen eye . Nice an quiet . zero recoil. supper accurate .

A combo would be my choice for a farm gun to keep by the back door. 222 / 12 gauge combo will control any pest that decides to visit.

Air rifles have come a long way, and are capable of shooting slugs. 400 yards is a stretch but not impossible with today's gear.

I love my 17 wsm. It is an absolute laser and hits hard. It is my carry everywhere on the farm rifle. It will drop a coyote and everything smaller inside of 200 yards. Such a fun piece.

Lots to learn from this reply....
A .22 RF with the appropriate bullet (hollow point) will dispatch most varmints pdg except for the larger variety (yotes).
As tokguy says if you want a new gun then by all means, just dont sell the tried and proven 22 rf short for the task at hand.
Maybe the 17HMR or the 17 Mach2 might be the Unicorn to pine for, but 99% of us respondents are recommending a rim-fire for the o-p's intended purpose.
But dont torment us when you decide on your choice 'cause interested peeps wanna know :)

That would be news to an awful lot of them in my area. Yotes, that is.

Not had to resort to a second shot.

CCI Quiets, for ammo, if I figure noise may be an issue. Have to manually cycle the 10/22. Otherwise, it's whatever brick of ammo that is open at the time.

I've got a smoothbore 9mm garden gun that shoots both shot shells and 9mm ball ammo out to about 50 yds quite accurately. It's quiet and hasn't seemed to bother my neighbors when dispatching squirrels or gophers. Nice little acreage gun for sure.

From "Always Keep An Edge On Your Knife," lyrics by Corb Lund
...

Never sell the old .22, son, never sell the old .22
Cause the old .22's shot a gopher or two
So don'tcha never sell the old .22
Aim it to the left, a little low, son, aim it to the left, a little low
Cuz the old iron sight fires high and to the right
So aim it to the left, a little low

Browning BPR 22lr has a huge hollow point and comes out at close to 1400 fps. I stopped using it for grouse because it does too much damage if you hit them anywhere but the head. That’s the go too for anything that needs killing around here that won’t get eaten. I’ve never owned a 22 that would shoot stingers worth a damn

I know this thread is all about "recommend something other than .22LR".. but have you tried a wide range of available ammo types? I can't imagine a farm pest in Ontario that can't be killed with a CCI Stinger/Velocitor under 50 yards... and on the other end of the spectrum you have CBs which are quieter than most air rifles.
It's hard to beat the sheer versatility and availability of .22LR.

This is good advice. The CCI Velocitor has about 182 ft-lb of energy compared to about 102 ft-lb for CCI Standard Velocity -- about 80% more energy (at the muzzle) with same bullet weight. Stingers are a bit higher yet at 191 ft-lb energy.

Velocitor a great one to try if you just need a bit more than normal 22LR. I'd probably not use it every day in a family heirloom as I'd expect a bit more wear than usual.

I’m thinking this just a bad time to be trying to find different rounds right now. Going to try some stingers, velocitors and minimag when I find some.
