My 13 year year old son came out tonight with me to get familiar with the new stock on the 7x57 mountain rifle and to shoot the rifle for the first time. :) He fired a 154 grain Hornady at a distance of around 90 yards at a small square I put on a rock with black marker.:D He hit about half an inch left of the square and there was a puff of smoke and a solid thump.:) We then moved back to a distance of about 125 yards, he then hit some other rocks about 6 inches in diameter and blew some chunks off them. He said the bi-pod makes it real steady and the thumbhole stock fits the hand naturally, I think he is right.
Besides listening to instruction very well, the kid's a natural.:D

Excellent stuff, 303.:)
I can't wait to take my 2 boys out for some shootin' fun.
At present they're 2 yrs old and 9 months old respectively so I have a little while before the days comes but they're both big lads so I can see them shaping up to have a go as soon as they're big enough to hold a rifle steady.

I still remember the first time my Dad took me out to slay gophers. It was awesome, even if his p.o.c. .22 wouldn't hit anything. We still get to the "patch", 24 years later and I hope to go more often with him. John, don't forget to get some pics of you and your boy shooting together for his kids to see some day!

Pics are a really good idea, I usually forget the digital because it could get lost or broken. But the next range time I will bring it and get some pics, thanks Noel for the reminder. :) John:D

303 ...

No problem ... your original post said nothing about a gravel pit ... just rocks.

Rocks made me think ricochet ...

Glad your getting out together & teaching him right from the get-go !

My boy loves to shoot as well. He's 10 and can get 1.5 in groups at 100 yds with the 17hmr! He really wants to try the 30-06, but don't neede him to blow a collor bone! Next year!!!

I guess I should have been more specific about the gravel pit, I just assume everyone knows that I'm very careful .:) My son shot a 7mm mag just before he turned 12 and by then he had shot the 06,308,22-250, 222, lots of 303's etc. But I'm going to wait till he packs on a few pounds before he gets behind the .338 mag or the 45-70. My boy was at the range with me when the guy at the table next to us got himself a gusher over the eye from holding a scope too close. I bought a 7 mag that day right at the range, 5 minutes later as the dude was wiping off his face my son fired the same 7 mag with nothing but a hit on target. We were both impressed, the guy with the cut was a little less enthusiastic.:p Yes, it was an old style Remington BDL rifle with a nice walnut stock and a blued barrel.:)

Here is my youngest one from this spring, not many gopher that day but a real fun day out, lots of practice and fun.

One side benifit I heard of but had not expected to be so noticible, was an increase in self confidence, that spilled over to other things, because up till then he was having real trouble learning to ride a bike (a mental block or something) but a week or two later he had it beat.

During vacation this year I had all 3 out in a sand pit near where we were at and went thru a brick or so. At one point I had this one just shooting a pop bottle @ 10-15 yards and he just kept drilling it, so I told him to shoot the top off. So the begger pops it off first shot for the rest of the day he shot at 25.

Beware the child who knows his parents believe in him or her, they will go far!

I never did much with my Dad at all growing up and it was real hard. I am just starting to get to know him now. You can bet it won't be happening in the next generation. I might drive them nuts but I will always be there when they want to go play.:D

Great job Aulrich, keep it up!;)

My boy and I are heading down to Drayton next weeekend for Lefty ####'s rifle rodeo.
My son is of thee age now (16) that he is getting to be more of a shooting partner as well as son who shoots with me, and it is great.
I still get asked lots of questions, but I don't have to worry about watching him on the line, although I ofteen do , from a distance. I tend to mess
with his "zone " when he knows I am critiquing him!
Not that I have to very much, the kid can hold his own!
