Favorite bear medicine?

Wife will be using her Steyr in 7mm-08 loaded with 140 gr Sierra Pro Hunters.
I will be using my Marlin 336ER in 356 Win with 200 gr Power Points, and if presented with a short shot, may use my Marlin 1894S in 41 Rem Mag with Winchester 240 gr Platinum Tips

Well yeah, you used a cup and core bullet at magnum speeds (one that's known to be on the explosive side no less)... That's asking for a shallow wound and a blown up bullet...

With the sks they would be going much slower, where they will be far less likely to fail miserably. Now, I wouldn't pick the sst either due to its tendency to come apart (not to mention the poor sectional density of a 123gr 30cal pill) but there aren't a lot of other options for 310cal bullets. A 311cal 150gr soft point (such as what PRVI makes for 303) would probably make good medicine though assuming you keep range short enough to keep velocity high enough to expand.

Exactly right, in all respects. 65 yards with a 7mm SST going 3100 fps isn't good, it's the situation least likely to be good. The same load at 300 yards plus would do much better. 7RM with a 139 SST is a varmint load or one for long range on medium game.

Aiming for the shoulder on a bear is a risky shot also... the vitals are well back of the shoulder, and if you miss bone it's a flesh wound if it's a 90 deg broadside shot. If you'd actually smashed the shoulder joint, the bear wouldn't have gone anywhere or would have limped off on three legs. I suspect the same shot a foot back would have laid it out, putting an SST through thin rib cage into the heart/lungs.

Not sure this was the bullet's fault, but rather a fault in shot placement and selection of load for the task.

I use my 270wsm with 140 Accubonds for everything. Did a quick job on my first bear.

I have been carrying my 375H&H the past couple years just to see what it does but I ended up passing on the bears I saw.

I recently put a Sako Bavarian Carbine 30-06 together with a Leupold 1-5X20. I dialled her in with 190 Accubonds just for bears. Hopefully this year I find a big boar.

Can't wait this will be the first year in a while we'll all be together for bruins

If I go out bear hunting this spring, my top choice will be my 6.5 Grendel SLR

I haven't taken my Ruger GSR out yet either, so I may grab that if I'm feeling like a bolt action day.
