favorite black bear HUNTING caliber

I've taken black bear with the 30-30, the 338WM, the 308Win, and the 45-70Gov't.
even took one with the 44-40.
Conclusion?
Blackie is not hard to kill if you place the bullet correctly.

No doubt, but man,I have an unfired 460 wthby that's itchin' to get out. Just too damn pretty to take it outside! It's haunting I tells ya:runaway:

Wouldn't that be more correctly a 7.62X57, Hoyt...........

Sure... let's go with that... but then, what of the Roberts?

How about you come up with a snazzy name for the 7.62X57 or .308X57... after all, you have plenty of experience naming cartridges (Penguin et al).

All I've got is "Middle Mauser."

.375 H+H

Just because. It works on everything. Not saying a pile of other calibers don't work too.

.460 Wbys push a 500 grain round nose.

Anything with a bullet weight of somewhere between 150 to 200 grains and with a muzzle velocity of somewhere between 2500 to 3000fps will kill your bear. Or a .22 LR at close range between the eyes. And the latter is a true story.

.180 grains out of a .308 with the furthest I've had to go to retrieve was about 50 yards cause it fell down an embankment.
But now with the ATRS Modern Hunter I might be tempted to double tap

I got a Puma 1892 in 454 Casull for bear spray duty. It holds 9+1 rounds. I like to load it with 300 gr Hornady XTP Mag that travel at 2000 fps at the muzzle.

Have one of the blue Amadeo Rossi M92 carbine (20" bbl) models in 454 Casull.
It doesn't have the little safety switch on top of the bolt nor does it have the hammer lock.
Just the half #### safety as John Moses Browning designed it.

I stripped it apart and polished and honed the internals as soon as I bought it.
Superb shooter and knocks em down with the 335 grain hard cast lead bullets I load for it.
Cycles like a dream with one finger.

Tru-oil works wonders on the junglewood stock.
I thought of getting a new stock from Boyds but the Tru-oil did such a good job I decided to keep the factory wood on the gun.

I applied the Tru-oil right on top of the factory "shoe polish" finish and rubbed in several coats.
The gun looks like the real thing so much it coulda come out of Rooster Cogburns saddle scabbard.

270 with hornady 130 grain sst ammo. Bang flop on all that have encountered that combo. I still love the broadhead though for quick quiet kills.

I have arrowed several blackies and I must say, when properly done they die amazingly fast...........faster I believe than the same placement with a rifle.

I agree, Douglas... I have arrowed 55+ black bears and when properly placed, an arrow does very quick terminal work... but not just on black bears, but deer and moose etc... also.

Well I carried several rifles this season but ended up getting my bear with my 458wm. My longest shot on a bear to date. 160 yards across a clear cut. The Remington 405 gr bulk bullet did a great job making a big hole. A very big hole. I shot her as she ran away up a rise. Hit just right of the spine in front of the back hip. Broke the spine and took out almost all of the ribs and stopped under the front shoulder. The tough critter made it 40 yards into the thick stuff. I followed it up and found it not dead to my surprise and hit her again at 10 yards. She was prolly 175-180 lb range.
My buddies bear was hit at 20 yards with a 300 Wm 180 gr tsx. Hit at the base of the neck the bullet crossed thru the chest and exited near the last ribs. His bear made it 10 yards. We recovered all 4 petals. The shank exited with a tiny hole
