You gents have been very helpful on my "FTR barrel, bullet, twist" and "FTR bipod" threads. I have in fact bought a rifle with 1-10" twist, throated for 215s, usable for some of the lighter bullets. Intitial testing seems to indicate that it'll shoot better than I'll ever be able to; so that part is progressing nicely. I've got a Tier One FTR bipod coming, which leads to the next question.

What's the current favorites for rest bags? My stock has a slope to the buttstock bottom, but I might brush off my metal working skills and rig up a bag riding rod. (Technical term I just made up).

It seems like there's more Edgewood bags at our shoots than other brands, but there are as many kinds as there are shooters. Is there a best, or safest guess, or an obvious no-brainer quit worrying about it choice? No brainer is fine with me.

Try a Protector bag. What is the width of the flat on the bottom of the rifle? Match the width up to the number of threads for equal width on the Protector bag. This will help for the tracking during recoil. You can order online also.

what is the stock
as SteveB asked what is the width of the flat. 1/2, 5/8, or 3/4. the bag should be 1/8 larger or smaller then your stock width. I prefer larger, others smaller.
Is your new stock butt flat or have a rise. that will greatly change the rear bag selection.
what is the butt's stock flare tall and steep or short and wide. this will help in choosing ear height.
all three makers Edgewood, Protektor and SEB make great bags. they all make big bags that when used with heavy fill assists in helping rifle stability.
Your rifle should ride on the flat of the bag and not on the ears

and with thoughts of a round bag rider Don't Do it Round is round and there rifle will flop around allot more then a triangle bag rider.

As an aside 215's are a b-itch to get to work well. please know this going in.

All the best

I believe (but can't swear to it) that the stock is a Robertson Composites BC-1. Or at least I can't swear to the BC-1 part but that's what it looks like
from checking at the website. It doesn't really have a flat portion to the bottom to the butt-stock, which is sloped, not flat. The not flat, but not real round portion of the stock tapers from pretty flat and 3/4" right behind the pistol grip to mostly round and maybe 1/2" at the butt-stock.

That make any sense?

i have the Robertson H&H stock similar rise and butt section

you need a rear bag with a slope similar to this

The rifle width is 1/2" I would select 9/16 or 5/8 for spacing; you can pack the ears a bit firmer without causing the rifle to sit higher in the ears and not on the flat.
2 inch tall (mid ears)
cordura or slick...your choice

Call protektor to discuss they have 1000's of guys ordering bags and they can tell you their thoughts on spacing... if you order from them do not get it filled the extra weight will near double the price. you will have to fill the bag yourself

great discussion

it took me 3 bags to get it right. LOL

That looks a whole lot like the one I have coming, except mine has lower ears and 3/8" spacing. It seems like people have differing ideas on spacing in the article you quoted, some want them wider and some want them narrower. I expect it'll take three bags to get it right for me too. Even if I lucked out and got it right the first time I'd still have to get it wrong twice to prove it. :)

I'm having some good luck tuning the 215s with Varget. No speed but they shoot, or at least out to 800 which is as far as I've taken them so far.

I have been following this thread with keen interest. Just curious are there any retailers in Canada that as a rule have these better quality rest on hand or do they have to be ordered from the manufacture.
Thanks

Willy 1, no one in Canada makes a similar product there are several makers around the world SEB Edgewood, Protektor and Lenzi the upside because they are leather and not a firearm there is no issues with shipping around the globe.

Dogleg the discussion was pretty aggressive at time. I have spoken with ALF and he is a world record holder at 1,000yrd bench rest. I believe the other guy is a short range BR (SBR) shooter. I subscribe to the larger size as you can pack the ears firmer and allow the rifle to track more inline as if you had a front rest.

I also try and subscribe to the idea that a rear bag should not hold any energy when the rifle is at rest. if you lift the rifle out of the rear bag and the ear move they have stored energy (and most likely they will move closer together) a live bag will mess with vertical.

And unlike most of the guys in the discussion who are using a front rest you my friend are running a bipod. There is no way to overcoming rifle alignment and NPA with a bipod; your rifle with be free to swing to the least resistant side. BR and 1000 BR guys have a front rest which locks them in place and only have one direction... back.

Some of the best shooters in the world have no issues with the rifle jumping targets after every shot BUT the jump is consistent every time.

good luck

I see a lot of guys at KO2M using a Tier One or Phoenix bipod and a piece of astro turf for consistency.
I am expecting the Tier One tomorrow in the mail so I will try it out soon enough.
I also picked up an unfilled leather rear bag from princess auto for $10 and filled it up full with fine play sand....will see soon enough.
As much as I like tiny consistent groups I also like to practice positional / PRS type shooting with a bipod and lightweight squeeze bag since it is applicable to real life such as hunting. I plan on experimenting with both to see what works well for me.

KO2miles guys that i know Derek and Paul have their 18lbs FTR rifle set up so they stay on target after recoil; their KO2miles guns weigh close to 50lbs and track just as well. both run phoenix bipods.

FTR has moved to a board or more likely a steel plate to make tracking more consistent.

first rear bag i had and still have is a shooters ridge all leather the ears are wide apart and came together as a V. I controlled the amt of resistance and rifle height by squeezing the bag with my non shooting hand. Still use it in precision matches
