Favorite forgotten cartridges making a comeback

You had a TC barrel re-bored!?! Dude... that's hardcore!

Here's my 1947 Husqvarna in 8x63 Sw.

PS: I also have a .280 Ross I'm fond of - glad someone picked that as well.

I think we have forgetting how much of a rage the 35 WHELEN was back in it's day. I just bought one this fall and fell in love with it. Hornady has a 200grn load in their superformance ammo and it's awesome. They claim it does 2930fps in a 24'' barrel. I hand load mine with VARGET @ 61 grains with a 200 grn/sp out of a RUGER M77 22'' barrel and it shows no signs of high pressure. Very accurate but is devastating on deer. It leaves a huge excite hole. I think it's a bit more powerful than the 9.3x62 because it's got better long range performance.
The WHELEN is something like 9x63. The 8x63 sounds like it would be a very nice cartridge as well.

OK, I'm going to sound rather uneducated here, but why an 8x63 when you can have an 8mm/06 with easily obtained and formed brass?

8x63 has more case capacity than 8mm-06 and the brass is thicker at the base to take higher pressures. It's designed from the beginning to push a 218 grain .323" projectile to 2500fps+ in a standard load. I hot load it a bit better than that in a fully bedded Mauser 98 action.

Plus it's cool to have a calibre that nobody else has, or has even heard of. I'm set up to reload Berdan primers and I have a nearly inexhaustible supply of cases and loaded surplus ammo. I shoot it almost for free.

If I wanted easy I would have left it a 30/06....I like to be the only one on the planet shooting a T/C Pro hunter in 8X63.
Case capacity is a tad more than a 8mm/06....And I have enough brass to reload for many....MANY....Years.

Russ...

Russ, do you have one of the Lee 8x63 die sets Andy & I had made up a few years ago? At the time, we did a minimum production run and sold the extra sets on here. We actually sent them the Forster drawings Andy used to get Forster to manufacture 8x63 Swede reamers. Those reamers made a LOT of 1919 barrel out of 8x57 barrels and more than a couple Mauser 98 conversions.

My Husky has taken a few big deer - none of them ever needed a second round ;)

Marstar was selling the 8x63 at $75/1000, IIRC some guys were buying it by the pallet.

I bought some on belts for $150/1000 and sold the belts for $100, and pulled the components down.

Wow. That is like .22 LR prices.

Yes I did get one of those Die sets from Andy. I've made good use of them too. I found the 175gr sierra pro hunters to be extremely accurate out of both 8X63's.
Here's a 5X4 I got with the FN98. 161yards Dead in Tracks

Who did the reboring? Thanks.

To bring things back on topic...

...don't just limit yourselves to rifle cartridges.:)

Well, how about an old but very nice S&W mod. 53 in 22 Jet, or a 4 5/8 " 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk in 41 Mag. ?
Almost forgot.... an old Colt New Service in 38-40 WCF.

As for rifles.... a 6.5 Rem. Mag., 300 H&H, 9.5X56 MS, 348 WCF, 257 Roberts and its wildcat sibling the 257 Ackley Imp., 6.5X54 MS, a wildcat 450 / 348 Ackley Imp.
I'll have to take a look..... might have missed some... LOL !

I'm going to toss the 9mm Browning Long into the ring.

Few years back current production ammo was imported into Canada. Used to have to find it at gun shows.

Plenty of Swedish m1907 pistols kicking around.
