Took a couple of deer with the 44-40 a couple of years back, it's still as effective as it was in the 1870's.
Not making a come back but the 35Newton would be a fine thumper. I have 20 rounds but strangely no rifle to go with them.
The first was 50 feet or so, the second about 75 yards, Handloads both. The first at 900fps, the second the following year at 1350fps. Took me a while to get an accurate high velocity load in that rifle. I'm not remembering what bullet I used, but I think the first was cast from a Lyman mouldHow far didja dare?

For me, the top & bottom. A 22 hornet that I reload very cheep and does much more the the 17 hmr for less $$. A cartridge that is over looked but I injoy is the 9.3x74.
