Favorite forgotten cartridges making a comeback

The 280 Ross chambered Ross M-10 is the only 'magnum' rifle I own. I have yet to shoot it, it's in excellent original condition. I would like another that has been messed with to shoot. I also really want a 300 H&H still. Maybe I should put two and two together and make a custom sporter on a model 10 action in 300 H&H. That would be awesome, especially in some fancy custom wood.
 
6.5x57R for my Ferlach over/under, 7x57R for my JP Sauer and Sohn drilling and 348 for my vintage Model 71. I reload for all of them and have a blast shooting them. The 6.5x57R and 7x57R are super accurate. 348 kicks like a mule.
 
I look at some of the items in my small meager collection and a slightly different thread title comes to mind. Favorite forgotten cartridges NOT making a comeback. A few examples of which are;

Lots of the big old stuff was basically forgotten and have now made comebacks:

.450-400 Nitro Express
.416 Rigby
.404 Jeffery
.450 Nitro Express

and to a lesser extent:
.470 Nitro Express

.505 Gibbs

Well from what I read and heard it was/is a fine cartridge so I don't really get its lapse into obscurity. Maybe something to do with the quest for new and improved cartridges but others like the .270 soldier on. Last I read only Ruger made a rifle chambered in the .257 and I'm not even sure if that's correct today.

Even the .257 Ackley Improved looks like what I'd expect a .257 WSM to look like.

It was really popular prior to the introduction of the .243 Winchester. Unfortunately that chambering caused a serious decline in the .257 Roberts and the .250-3000.

That's probably a good description, mine is sort of redundant to me or I'd probably shoot it more as it actually is a darn fine and very accurate cartridge even out of a stubby little 600 Rem.

I'm goin to say 6.5 swede and 8mm Mauser.
They were never dead, just forgotten over here.
Today we can get find rifles chambered in these euro beasts and find good quality ammunition on the shelves if you look around.

Seventy five yard shot with the old 44-40 would be almost a what, three second travel?
I remember shooting my old 44-40 as a single digit kid in age.
Seagull at about a hundred yards under dad's directions.
Dang gull was standing just in the water and I readied myself, aimed and pulled the trigger.
Got the gull wet..............aaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwkkkk.
Good shoot'in kid, just aim a wee bit higher.
Pull the trigger and look up and wait..................:cool:
 
There would be a few - the classic rimmed NE cartridges as some already mentioned, for one. You can now buy .450/.400, .450NE, .500NE and few others quite easily. 20 years ago the only one that was ever really seen (albeit very rarely) was the .470. Even .416 Rigby and others were very much boutique items. You can now buy ammo and brass at Wholesale and Cabelas.

North Americans have somewhat 'discovered' the 9.3x62 (almost a century late).

I have finally got myself into a .300H&H which I have wanted to do since my teens (the only small-medium magnums that really ever interested me were Holland's Rimless Super .30 and the 8x68). The .300H&H seems to maintain a small devoted following that see's the occasional up-tick in popularity.

I would argue that the 6.5 swede seems more popular now than it was a decade ago, probably because of the interest in the 6.5mm bore in general. the .264Win also seemed to enjoy a brief resurgence but will no doubt be killed by the new super 6.5's like the .26 Nosler.
 
It's true you can hear the bullet hit the target when you shoot at 100yds, but no, it's not three seconds. You figure it out, current load 1350fps.
I did screw around with much faster loads, I am using a '92 Winchester, but at speed, the groups really suck.

Ruger still makes a Number 1 in 257 Roberts. They stopped making M77s in it last year. When I started looking for a Bob I found Cooper and Montana rifle company will chamber a rifle in 257 Roberts for you.

To be brutally honest I've been having trouble finding decently priced ammo locally for my new rifle. Wholesale has a lot of boxes of the Nosler Custom at $60 a box. Couple other places had Hornady Superformance between $33 and $44 a box. Havn't found anybody selling brass yet. If anyone knows somewhere please PM me.
 
For me it is the 270 Weatherby.

I started hunting with one 35+ years ago and I am now hunting with it again same rifle even.

Back then I never really thought of the performance capabilities of this round now with 140gr TSX @ 3250fps I'm only 10" low @ 400 yards with a 225 yard zero basically a dead on hold out past 300 yards.
 
I'd like to see Ruger and Winchester and some others offer up their singleshots in some more of the rimmed cartridges instead of the current rimless ones. There is a lot of good stuff out there in choices for them to manufacture. Another run of 32-40 could be done in levers also, maybe 225Win,a 5.6, a 6.5 or 7mmx57R, 30R (7.62x68R), sub 30 cal H&H rounds, stuff like that, in the singleshots.

Like ALL Weatherby Cartridges the 270 WBee is a Excellent performer ! ;) RJ
