Elmer was definitely the one ,Jack ranks in there too.
Boddington is a blowhard who can only shoot trees. I read an article where he recommends on the calibers we can do without and the list was rather extensive. What kind of gunnut would limit the selection of irons???

Gatehouse,
Accuratereloading, that was it. That has to be what, eight years ago? I am going to try to get in touch with Ralph again. He lived and hunted in Alaska and the Yukon when it was still pretty open. Has some good stories and knows everyone in these parts into this stuff. Known Capstick since highschool as I recall it. Ralph retired about 95 I think. How old would that make Capstick? He must have been writting in the 50s and 60s?

Capstick didn't die until about 1993 or so???

He was writing into the 80's- I htink his last book was Peter Capsticks Africa, and it came out around 1988 or so. He died fairly young, about 65 or so IIRC.

Like I said, I heard lots of tales that he wasnt' much of a PH, that alot of his exciting tales came from talking to other PH's in bars etc...and I dont' care one bit if all his works were 100% fiction.

I vividly remeber reading "Death in the Long Grass" in about 2 sittings on my porch one summer, sipping on some ice cold beer. And I knew I wanted to hutn Africa some day, so I'm going to try for the next few years or so. Liek lots of people, it's alway about time and money and do I want to miss a season here in BC?:)

I dislike most gun writers and gun rags out there. Particularly the more modern ones. I find the level of praise for any given product is directly proportional to the amount of advertising said manufacturer purchases in that rag. Really - how often do you see a scorchingly honest review of some piece of turd in a gun rag? The 710 springs to mind. You should watch 'top gear' on BBC to see how a product review type show should be run. It's publicly-funded, so when they review a turd of a car they really rip it good. Honest, and useful.

That's what makes Internet forums like CGN so valuable. Here, a spade is a spade, period.

Amen, Testify!:D

Gatehouse,
I am the same on Africa. I hope it happens before too much longer but for the next few years time is scarce. Kids to raise and guns to build and work and life in the way. I wonder if it would be worth trying to organize a hunt for a few guys? Timing for me would be three to five years if I started now.

I have wanted to go to Africa since reading CJP Ionedes autobiography! He became known as the 'Snakesman' and was a real chracter.

For India reading, don't go past Col. Jim Corbett! Great books.

O'Connor and Carmichael.

I glanced at an article by Carmichael in a bookstore on the weekend and nearly bought the book.

It was called "Why you miss ducks."

Ross Seyfried, now there's a writer. I never felt that he was trying to sell anything except unbridled enthusiasm and tested information. I have to mention O'Connor, and of course there's always Patrick F.McManus.:D
Has anyone else noticed that the more exclamation points are used in an article, the bigger piece of crap it tends to be?
Least favorite writers would be anyone reviewing a product with a full page ad on the opposing page. I know that this is more a functional of the editor/publisher, but occasionally a professional needs to tell an employer to go to Hell, if he's to maintain any credibility at all.

Big fan of Jack O'Connor. Grew up reading his stuff in Outdoor life and Pedersen's. Have several of his books. He could spin a good yarn as well as educate one on guns and shells and bullets and game.

There are a few good guys around now but I don't really follow any of them too much.

John Barsness goes by Mule Deer at the campfire, I've enjoyed alot of his write ups except the one on the Savage 99, just my personal opinion but it looked to me like he just grabbed a bunch of info off me and a bunch of other regulars and wrote an article up with the infomation. He does own a couple 99's but it seemed wierd that he wrote an article on them with lots of info yet you never see him in the Savage Collectors forum at all, maybe just to take notes.;)

Hi;

What has happen to Ross Seyfried? He use to write for Handloader and had a great column and some good/excellent articles
