favorite hunting ammo for 22 lr

For grouse and rabbits federal 525. I've had very few fail to fires with it, it's cheap and my guns group at least 1" @ 50 yards with it which I think is acceptable for small critters. For the price I think it's great hunting /plinking ammo.

I've had pretty good success with bulk winchester too. Just stay away from Remington thunderfart.

While there are many accurate 22LR bullets out there and I have tried most of them I have only one go to 22LR hunting bullet they are accurate in every rifle I have ever shot them in.

They are called CCI SGB (small game bullet) they kill better than any other 22 bullet that I have ever used.

They have a wide flat meplat that just kills without damaging meat like high velocity Stingers etc. you can hear the difference of the smack when the bullet hits a grouse/rabbit.

they are extremely hard to find but I have over 1000 on the shelf so I'm good for years of hunting.

Still use the Win 555 bulk. Recently got my Waltz die to give a more pronounced hp. When the gophers emerge, I hope to see the difference. Also thinking of making another insert to give a segmented hp.

I want a quick stop. Head shots only if I want to eat it, so whatever shoots well. Sk+ works well for me. If I am shooting gophers I want a higher energy shell so mini mags or Yellowjackets.

I use CCI subsonic segmented HP for rabbit and CCI Quiet segmented HP on grouse with very good results on shorter distances out to maybe 30 meters. CCI velocitors work good on fox with head shots out to 50 meters. All are 40 grain bullets.

whatever is accurate in the rifle, followed by price...for some reason I can justifty match ammo to shoot tiny holes on paper but not to kill small game...only shoot rabbits and grouse, head shots out to 50 yards

I like CCI blazers in my semi's, accurate and don't jam...and my bolts it's all over the map, this past fall was a lot of yellow jackets and the federal blue box stuff (availablity mostly)

the exception is my new zastava z5, which only shoots quality ammo, seems to have a tight chamber after thoroughly cleaning and doesn't extract the cheap stuff, no issue with the good stuff

Yellow jackets (when I can get them at less than $35/500) and when I can't find them I use CCI Blasers. I use them for rabbits at <25 feet with a 10/22 variant. Reasonable accurate and no-jams.

Not too fussy about the brand, but I use HP for shooting gophers, and solids for grouse. I've been shooting Prairie Chicken and Ruffed Grouse for 55 years with solids. When I see the mess HP's make on a gopher, I don't see why I would use them on grouse!

If I am hunting grouse up at the wife's, in solid bush, I use shorts in my Savage 24.

I agree, solids are good for grouse if you can't shoot them in the head. I do not shoot gophers or anything at all I do not use. Segmented Subsonic/Quiet HP are humane for head shots.

I have several SGB tools made by a guy in the Rimfire Forums that do an excellent job of turning any ammo into SGB, I have them for flat-nosing LR, CC Longs and Shorts and they do a fantastic job. I generally use them on standard velocity RNL, but every once in awhile I'll flat-nose a bulk pack of HV HP's for some serious smack. Amazing the difference that flat on the front of the bullet makes.

I also have the reforming "bump tool" from DRock and have found it to be hit and miss, but when it hits it's awesome...

I hunt with a Rossi pump and always use a CCI 40 grain subsonic to keep the neighborhood (lake community) uninformed as to my activities. They stop anything I shoot from grouse to hares. I bought a brick of them 10 years ago and used them in an old Cooey and my new (to me) Rossi likes them too. I still have 300 or so left, so I'll be buying more when I'm 86.
