Favorite Revolver Make & Cal?

My first revolver was a 6" stainless Ruger SecuritySix .357Mag. Currently I have a 4" S&W Model 28 and a 4" S&W 581, both are 357 Magnum. I think you can see how this is going....

Any quality .357 is worth having...I have to force myself not to pick up a K-frame Smith [although I wouldn't shoot it too aggressively] or another Ruger, and I'd happily look at a Colt if one came my way. I'm not too familiar with Taurus, but the few I've seen looked decent for the price.

.44 Magnum, same deal but they will be somewhat more expensive to shoot. Few things in life [shootingwise anyway] are nicer than a large-frame revolver firing moderate loads.

Bottom line...my favorite revolver is the Mod 28 Highway Patrolman. They are available with 6" barrels for all you non-grandfathered types, and definitely a prize, what with their pinned barrels and countersunk chambers, wide triggers and hammers.

Good choice. Nothing shabby about the 28 and that was my first quality wheel gun. It performed just as well as the 27's I had later on, just not quite as 'pretty'.

Just one?

S&W 629 in .44 Magnum.

Couldn't agree more... here's my baby:

Love my Rugers, especially in .45LC

You can download that round or beef it up like Buffalo Bore's +P 300gr offerings

AS the op is looking at a first revolver the choice in my opinion should be a Smith M-17 .22 cal, get it and shoot the daylights out of it and then get a Smith 586 or 686 6" revolver and starting with .38 spl loads shoot the #### out of it and mover up to full .357 loads.

Personally I favour an M-24 or 624 4" or 6.5" for my personal use followed by a 4" or 4.35" 686.

44Bore.

Lordy, Rigmover, that is quite the collection...I'm somewhat speechless...except for the fact that my Ruger GP100 4.2" is awesome fun.

What H4831 said the Blackhawks are hard to beat in strength ,and while the reg Mag 357,27,28 and other combat mags are

nice for sure they have side plates and screws to mess with(and up) and are pretty animic to the ruger sec six build.

The ruger sec six has only one screw to mess up and it's on the grips, and the hand and transfer bar are way over built.

It's a joy to take down and is truly a tank of a revolver.

My first revolver was a Ruger Single Six. It was an old make and a really fantastic gun. It was passed down to me and I'll never be able to give it away, not only for sentimental value but also because it is incredibly fun to shoot. I would encourage anybody who is getting into wheelguns to try one out.

If money was no object and I could have whatever I wanted, I've always been fascinated by the Chiappa Rhino in .40 S&W. The design is really weird and interesting; I wish I could shoot one without owning it. I personally think it looks badass, especially in the blued version, and the very novel concept of the revolver in .40 seems worth experiencing. Ideally, I'd be able to buy a 4'' but until we ditch the nonsensical gun laws I'd be quite alright with a 5''.

Given I can actually own one of these, I have few doubts I'll buy one someday. But it'll have to be far enough down the road that I'm buying guns for pure novelty.

Thanks everyone for all of the responses and of course the fantastic pictures of your collections! I've decided to start with a Ruger Single Six, shoot the crap out of it, then move into something in the .357 Mag.

A) Dan Wesson 414 Super Mag (supposedly only 14 originally built), or the Freedom Arms in 41 Rem Mag w/ 5 1/2" bbl (the latter more likely to be scratched off bucket list!)

B) Ruger New Model Blackhawk in 41 Rem Mag w/ 4 5/8" bbl. Would also like to get an older Blackhawk 3 screw model, and a flat top (if they offered it in the 41 Rem Mag)
This was actually my first revolver. Foolishly sold it.
Have since replaced it with another blued one, and a stainless one. Have equipped these both with extended grips from Texas Grips in curly maple (on blued model) and ebony (on stainless model) to fit my large hands.
Also have a S&W Model 57 w/ 6" bbl. would like to get a stainless model as well, and a Ruger Redhawk w/ 4.2" bbl.

Really hard to say. I guess it depends on if you mean currently in production and available new or any revolver from any era? Cost no option?

Right now I'd have to say my Manhurin MR 73 in .357 as favorite overall for new production with some classic era Colt and S&W target revolvers in .38 and .22 leading in the "from any era category." Hard to beat a pre 1960 K38 or K-22 Target masterpiece.

I like the S&W 686 .357's , they have a great feel to them for me and I love the look. I don't think you can go wrong with most of their offerings.

Old necro thread but here we go.

Is it possible to have multiple A's and B's? If so, I would have a hard time picking between any of these:

A) 1- Mauser Parabellum Sport 9mm
2- Korth Sport .22lr
3- Manurhin MR 73
4- '57 Colt Python

B) Although not cheap but sevral times cheaper than anything listed above, my good'ol 1939 K-22 Outdoorsman with the scarce factory humpback hammer. Probably the best .22 revolver ever manufactured.

If it was your first handgun ever? I'd have to say a S&W in 22 cal. I'm kinda partial to the 617 myself. Why? Good quality so it will last and cheap to shoot so a day at the range won't break the bank.

If you have other handguns and this will be your first revolver? I'd have to say a S&W 686. Why? It will last, and you can shoot 38 spl in it which is light recoiling and relatively inexpensive, then when you want more boom you can load her up with 357's and have some fun.

Wan't something different you say? Then really branch out and go for a Uberti replica of the Colt 1851 Navy. Why? 36 cal lead ball over black powder is light recoil and inexpensive to shoot, once you have the necessary doodads for black powder of course. And they are just plain fun to shoot.
