Favorite round for mountain hunting

Not to derail the OP’s thread . You are talking about favourite round here .

What about total rifle weight that you are packing ?
I’m interested in that . I realize it comes down to barrel and stock .
I would think more so barrel . As a non wood stock would probably be the best choice

So that leaves the barrel what contour/ weight if your not going pencil thin

Don’t take the above as I’m a firearms expert as I’m not !

Any input or should I start another thread on this ?

It’s funny as I’ve gotten older Im ok with a touch more weight in my rifles, my last 280 AI I just had built is 7lbs 12oz scoped

the 7.5lb mark scoped seems to be about perfect, as Jack O’Connor once stated 7.5lbs is the perfect weight for a lightweight sheep hunting rifle.

So Chuck I will load up some 7 PRC’s with 69 grs of RL26 and 145 Barnes LRX bullets at SAMMI. Lenght of 3.340 and see what they will do for accuracy and speed 🤷‍♂️
Also will load a few more with more powder and some with GRAND and see what I can get the lowly 7 PRC to do . 🤪😂
69 grs = 3242 avg Fed215 145 LRX at 3.275 coal
69.5 grs = 3258 avg
70 grs = 3283 avg

All ok on pressure ! 3300 + should be achieveable - Next run will be 70.5 and 71 grs and maybe some of the new 152 LRX ers 👍

Rangefinder yes, kestrel I don’t see the need, bipods are useful but not needed. Just my thoughts though!
Kestrel's aren't great in the mountains anyway... it can't read the updrafts and swirling winds in canyons and across valleys... even with a Kestrel, you need to experience in judging wind on long range shots.
