February Purchases

Picked up this nice little 96/38 in "unissued since refurb/conversion" condition.

Was smothered in cosmolene when I got her, a nice little time capsul from a 1998 or so import.

All matching except hte rear sight for some reason, which matches itself. No idea why it's m/m but it definitely was imported this way. I've heard that the 96/38's were sometimes built with the odd m/m part, or possibly it had a target sight that was later removed - who knows?

Still a keeper though. I have the correct water-transfer range decal en-route from Sweden to finish her off. The previous owner never de-gunked it and never fired it, but DID take the time to carefully scrape off the original range decal. Bonehead.

For those who don't know, 96/38's and M38's asoften as not had a water transfer decal painted over with shellac instead of the metal plate nailed on.

Other Feb acquisitions that I might get around to posting are:
-Sportered M89 Swedish rolling block
-Smith Corona M1903A3
-1944 Tula PU Sniper
and a couple other yet to be disclosed items of interest. Jut need to find the time - it's a busy month.

Longbranch 1950....

Just received today but the deal was made in February. I can't believe that it appears to be unissued and the coating not even removed yet. What a trade. Posted a 1911A1 for trade for a LB and "voila". Happy I didn't jump at a couple of others which were semi-offered. Serial #93L15XX

Picked up in February

Picked up a really nice Long Branch No4 Mk1 in 22. Converted by a sleeve in the barrel by AJ Parker with a Parker rear sight that is quite rare. I restocked it in new No4 wood and it looks new.

K98

Finally got a digital camera, so here are a couple pics of my new K98; one of my February milsurp purchases. It's mismatched, but it's not neither a Yugo nor a Russian. The person I bought it from had it from before these rifles were being imported into Canada. I am not sure of the source of the rifle, but I am guessing it may be an East German rework...who knows? Anyone??

Hi .. :)

I think claven 2 is right, it's East German, plus it's been rebarreled. Original 1939 Obies normally have the ammunition marking (ie: "7,9" showing what it tested at) marked ahead of the knoxform. Either that, or it's there and the camera flash has whited it out. Also, note the lack of matching serial number on your barrel, which the original 39 Obie would have had, also indicating a barrel change.

There's a 211 pic photo montage of a "righteous" all correct example of the same rifle you, currently displayed in the Milsurp Knowledge Library - German Section (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

Many of the East German K98k refurbs are rebarelled it seems. I have one in a byf44 that is virtually identical to your rifle, new 8mm barrel and all. Same MK-Z stamp as well.

From what I can tell, there are two EG refurb variations. One type is marked with the VoPo sunburst cartouche, will invariably have a replacement beech handguard, total reblue, original Nazi barrel and be renumbered matching, restamped on most parts and electropencilled on the flag safety. The other type will nto be VoPo marked, will generally have mis-matched parts, usually rebarelled, and have the MK-Z stamp. I suspect the second type were done much later than the first type from rifles with poor barrels that werent; good enough to go through the first round of refurbishing for he post-war Volkspolitzei.

You won't find that in any refernce books though, it's just a well grounded theory I've pieced together over the years from waching the imports come and go, along with their reported sources.

You're right though, I'd rather have ANY East German refurb than a Yugo or RC refurb. They are much better done/fit/finished and aren't scrubbed and renumbered on the wrong side of the receiver.

Nice East German rifle there.
I bought one of the earlier style VoPo reworks from a well known member of this forum just over a year ago, and it conforms exactly to the ones Claven described.

Claven is absolutly right, they're the best of any refurb process I've seen (lol like that means much), with the possible exception of a West german Joe K. had for sale.

How does it shoot? And where'd you find it?

Other than the receiver, everything else looks untouched. The rifle is in mint condition with a perfect bore. I don't think it was shot very much...

Well, as we said and you can see in the pics, it probably wouldn't have been fired as it's a brand new barrel, not the original 1939 Oberndorf. It's most likely been FTR'd and put into storage, later to be sold off as surplus. Now, you own her, so take good care of her.... :)

Al I said was that SOME of them seem to have an electropencilled SAFETY. I've not observed EP elsewhere on them, and it's not on all of them.
