Finally after 20 yrs ........

...what is the case for target shooting in NB? I may be moving back East next Spring and would like to be somewhere I can buy a house on a nice chunk of land, and just pop out back and do some shooting year round.
Most folk just join a club, but a varmint or spring bear licence will cover a rifle during those seasons.

Other than that, I'm not sure what it would take to have a range on your own land. It sure would be nice.

Does your permit allow you to shoot any moose, or just bulls? In 3 days, I'd be hammering anything that came out, as long as that's possible...
Anything is legal and you do shoot the first one you see.

We are allowed to have a "second gun" on the licence here. I was second gun for a fellow 4yrs ago and shot his moose on the first day. I thought it was a cow, but turned out it was a young spike bull with both his little hornys broke off. Shot was behind the ear @ 25yds with a 250gr Speer from a 35Whelen. The results were dramatic. ;)

Cool, thanks. So, from that, I take it the rules are similar to NS. I couldn't believe it when I went to a friend's place up here in Ontario for the first time, and he told me they were able to shoot here year round, just need your PAL and reg cert. I was in shock coming from NS!

Again, good luck on the hunt!

Matt

Congrats, Paul. Look forward to the photos of a successful hunt.

Once you get the 'once in a lifetime NB moosehunt' out of the way, won't be much keeping you in the East, eh?

I'll vouch for ya at the committee........:)

Our moose season here is anywhere from 6 days to 84 days, depending on which area you're hunting. But we can hunt every year...:)
I grew up in S. Ont. Our family has a moose camp between Hurst and Long Lac. At that time you could just buy a licence on the way and as many as you had members in your camp.

Speaking of moose hunting Paul, here's some pics I got today. These were taken just north of Whitecourt. ROA, Neudy and I went scouting country.

When ROA spotted the bull it was bedded down. Then it got up and began feeding, moving away from us.

We snuck up behind the bull and Neudy called to it, just to see how it would react.

The bull has 3 tines on the right brow palm and 4 on the left. I figure it's about 45". It's still got a month to grow, I don't think it'll get too much wider but it should get taller and fill out some. Maybe 50" or just over.

Right after this pic the bull moved out.

It's deceiving how small the antlers can look when they are held over such a huge body. That bull is packing ALOT of steaks! When I shot mine I thought it was about 45" or so until I layed my rifle in the antlers and it was over six inches past each way.
Great pics, thanks for posting and fueling the fire to go again!

is that the same whelen that made its way west ?????

SC,

Congrats on the tag. Now don't get caught up in jury duty or something like that in the meantime..........lol

Its funny you brought up Jury Duty. I have been on notice to attend 3 times in the last 6 years, always in Oct./Nov. I don't mind serving, but jeebus, how about in the winter sometime....

I told my boss I'd quit if he didn't let me off that week. Not sure what I'd do about jury duty.

.

Tell them you are sick...

Once in 20 year moose chance is more importantt han civic duty....

I've never been called. But no real courthouse around here, anyway, maybe that's why...
