Not to worry if you treat it with a little common sense. Just like an AR you don't just unlock the upper and let it fall free pivoting on the front pin.
It's not a design flaw, it's just not completely idiot proof.
Guess who will break theirs?
I personally have put thousands of rounds through my 180b and only ever had maybe a few feed problems (but no more problems than I've had with any AR), but I've never had the slightest concern about the receiver cracking. I use .223 and 5.56, sometimes both in the same day with no difference, and sometimes well over 500 rds in a day. Its safe to say I've put it through its paces. I guess I've got one of the good ones.
I have an AR-180, I was under the impression it was 'Prohibited'/Safe Queen now. This B.S. really annoys me AND everyone else. My 2nd wife used to shoot it in competition with the 2 -40 rd. and 2 -15r rd. mags it came with. I even got a Sterling 180 scope mount for it and modified a bunch of AR-15/16 mags. so all would shoot in both, good old days !
So CAN it be taken to range or NOT ? I'll block a magazine to 5.

I would hope they are all block to 5 already
If not you won't have to worry about taking anything to the range
& No you can not take an original AR 180 to the range

That is true , But you then have a restricted rifle (18") barrel
Nice rifle. I had the chance to buy an original 20 years ago but passed as I was getting into milsurps and not black rifles. Wish I had one of the originals but the newer versions with the ability to use unaltered M16 mags is a bonus for me as I have about fifty of them for my ARs.
I am holding my breath for the improved version with the aluminum lower that was supposed to come out in 2011. I guess Armalite is too busy cranking out AR parts for the huge demand of the US market. Also there is a lot of talk on US sites for a change in barrels to use standard AR barrels with the option of chrome lining rather than the current offering. I like the looks of the original myself.
As far as cracking of the polymer lower I can't speak for the Armalite AR180B but I do have a CavArms Polymer lower for one of my ARs that I use for my light 20 inch rifle that has performed well. It has the best upper/lower fit of all my ARs not one single problem from it. There are a few pics out there of cracked Armalite lowers but to my knowledge Armalite has made good on replacing all of them.

Sorry it took me awhile to find the thread I saw it in. Just something that someone had posted on AR15.com. I have not substantiated it though.

Added: nothing on the Armalite website as it is no longer in production. What would you think of a AR180 upper that would mate to a standard AR15 lower? Prohib?

That's a good question.
The upper is not the prohibited part as its the converted auto receiver that makes the 180 prohib.
However the lower on a restricted AR-15 is the serialized part so I would assume a Franken combo would be restricted?
