After a wait while Wholesale Sports got my backorder processed, I finally got my #1. It was worth the wait. I should have one this years ago. Even the Ruger trigger, that I have heard such awful things about is quite nice.

Can hardly wait to get some reloading done and get to the range.:D

Congradulations Preacher :) If I remember right, that wasn't too bad of a wait at all. You've definitely got the right platform to see what the old cartridge can do.

That's a rifle I'd love to own myself. I've got a couple #1's but nothing bigger than a .270. A Tropical in .405 would be an awesome hunting combo and a really classy rifle.

Believe it or not it was 7 -- count 'em -- 7 long weeks. Thats 49 days. That's 1,176 hours. Wadda ya mean it wasn't a long wait?? :D

I've got to get some brass, and up in the sticks, it means a 90 mile drive one way to where I can buy loaded ammo, or wait for Wholesale Sports to ship it. CTC in Kenora has the loaded ammo, but it's $48 a box. Whew! I think I'll order the brass -- $55 for 50. Still not a give away. ;)

Not that you were counting or anything :D What'r you going to do for a sighting system? As is, scope or?

My eyes ain't what they used to be, and it comes with medium rings. I wish it had come with low rings. I put an old, and I do mean old, Bushnell Banner 3-9X40 on it for now, but I am seriously considering a 2-7X33 Leupold VXII. The eye relief if quite good, and the cost is not bad. I may have to get extended rings to be able to get the scope back far enough. Hard to say. For now, I'll probably let a few go with the open sights.

Looking forward to it, for sure.

Your going to be a happy camper especially if she shoots as well as the one I've got. 300gr Hornady spt. + Varget = 2600fps+. Under 3/4" and no pressure signs to speak of and I have yet to retire a piece of brass. If your having fits getting brass let me know. I buy it when and where ever I can at a decent dollar.

Thanks RC. I think I will try Wholesale Sports and see. The rifle got here pretty quickly. The sent it to registration on Monday afternoon, and Friday at 2:00 in the afternoon I picked it up at the post office.

Could you pm me the load data that you are using with Varget. At 2600 fps, that 300 grainer has as much poop as a 375 H&H! I would likely be satisfied with less velocity than that, but if it will produce, I say, "Let 'em fly!"

I was thinking about trying some 325 Barnes X as well. Should prove interesting.

Glad your shoots so well. Hope mine does. Did you have to do any tinkering to get it shoot?

so where are the pics?

Still trying to figure out the posting pics thing, and haven't got any pics taken yet. I'll try to get some going.

Guys,

Are the Ruger #1 stocks oil rubbed, or do they have a verethane type treating on the top? To me, it does not have a gloss finish, but I wouldn't mind just bringing up the grain a little more. Suggestions????

All the factory # 1s I've owned were all finished in a low gloss type of stock finish certainly not an oil finish. Too bad as most # 1s have beautiful wood that would benefit from a hand rubbed oil finish.
The #1 in a 405 win is sure a sleeper factory loaded stuff @ 2200 fps and safe handloads to 2600fps { safe only in Ruger #1s }.
Can't wait to test out the custom mould 385gr. using wheel weights, spring is coming slow but sure.

Here is a couple of pics. Sorry for the poor quality. I am a fair shot with a gun, an okay preacher, and a terrible photographer. :D

Sorry for the size of the picture. I resized it to small, but it shore is a biggun. The scope is a temporary old -- 35 year old Bushnell Banner that is about ready to retire. Looking for different glass. Thinking Burris or Loopy. No $$ for it yet.

I have shot a total of 15 rounds out of the 405 now -- three rounds to get it on the paper where I wanted, and 4 - 3 shot groups. The largest was just under an inch at 50 yards, and the smallest was just 5/8" at 50 yards. When the 100 yard range opens up, I'm going to love shooting this thing. I do already. The chrony says the 300 gr FP Hornady factory rounds are coming out at an average of 2221 fps (at 12' from the muzzle).

I also got a chance to shoot my H&R Buffalo Classic in 45-70, and I am truly impressed with that for a not overly expensive rifle. With the stock sights, my first three shot group off the bags was 0.563" centre to centre. That'll do, I think. :) Velocity on the 300 WW JHPs was 1855 fps.

So I am completely sold out to the big bore craze for now. Who knows? Maybe next I'll get a small bore tack driver.

That's it? When I wanted a No.1-A in 7x57 a couple years ago, they told me it would be over a YEAR before Ruger did another run of 7x57 light sporters. I promptly gave up and settled for the .30-06 No.1-A light sporter they had in stock over at Russel's. No regrets, it's been a GREAT gun.

The ruger No.1 really is a premium firearm as far as factory guns are concerned - it surprises me more guys don't use 'em :)

Nice looking gun! Now you need to invest in some Leupold glass :)

I'm having fits with the dilema to refinish the wood in True-Oil or to leave it as-is. Still haven't decided, but methinks one day it will wear oil :)

x 2 on the Leup VX II 2-7 x 33.
Got one on a 45-70 # 1 - very happy with it.

Be a hero, give that old Banner to a kid up the street for his .22 - you don't need it and it owes you nothing !

Fellas,

I agree about the Banner. It's the first scope I ever owned, and . . . . sniff. . . . . sniff . . . . you want me to give it away ? ? ? ? I kinda got caught behind the 8 ball. While I was waiting for the #1 to come in, and thinking it would take forever, I bought another rifle -- the Buffalo Classic. By the time all was said and done, I had spent the price of a good scope on the rifle and dies and components. Four days later, I got the call that the Ruger was in. Yikes!

Couple questions:

1. Do any of you guys with #1s find that you have a bit of trouble getting the scope far enough to the rear to get the right cheek weld and scope picture?

2. Does the VX-II in 2-7X33 have enough eye relief to get the whole kaboodle back far enough so I am not crawling up the butt stock to get the full scope picture, or do I need to order some extension rings, and would Loopy low extended rings be a better fit than the Ruger medium extended?

I'm new to the #1, but not new to shooting or reloading. Been reloading for over 30 years, and been shooting for wayyyyyy too long to admit! :D

I also thought it was funny that a premium rifle, albeit non custom, with pretty nice wood, would have a lacquer finish instead of oil. I think it would make a much prettier rifle. Probably more durable finish, too.

1) No, if you us a quality scope such as Leupold with decent eye relief - that bushy banner CAN'T be comfortable to shoot without extension rings. Yuck.

2) Yes. In fact, I have a Leupold 2-7x33 VXII on mine RIGHT NOW. You won't need extension rings.

Here's mine wearing the 2-7x33 Leupold:
