Finds in the bush

I have two civil war bullets I unearthed on private land in West Virginia. They are a bit larger than 50 cal. and oxidized to a yellowish patena. One was obviously fired, the other was not.

Here are some Civil War bullets, dug from the battle of Kenneshaw mountain, just north of Atlanta, Georgia.
Most of them are about 58 calibre. The big one on the right bottom is flattened, so is not quite as large as it appears.
I sure wonder what that one on the right hit, to make such a perfect mushroom!

Great collection 4831! I find the fired slugs to be somewhat disturbing but spectacular in their own way. Very sad chapter in Ameican history. Yours are the same as mine, called a three ring mini ball I believe and 58 calibre or so and common. The most common slugs retrieved are drops, that is retreating soldiers would drop heavy loads of bullets on the ground to make hasty retreat possible. Fired slugs are flattened as yours and definately fired in anger. The mushroomed one as you stated on the right most certainly hit something or somebody soft. I picked my two up off a cultivated field in Virginia when I was down there crow hunting.

I was living in the Montebello area of Dartmouth, and one day decided to take a hike in the woods behind the French school, I got lost, and I was bush bashing for a while, I eventually came to this 20' diameter clearing that was like a cushion made of reindeer moss, seriously this moss must have been about 12" thick or more, roughly in the middle was this old fireplace ring made of what looked like round (?) granite beachstones, I don't know what the diameter of these stones would be maybe about 18" or so around, I eventually made it out to the Forest Hills Parkway & backtracked home from there.

Oh boy, we get to post pics of stuff recovered from the fields now. :)

A Leupold Vari-XIII in a bog, by a guy from my old gang.

DISCLAIMERS:
  • Owner was the one who accidentaly dropped it in the first place.
  • On QD mounts, dropped from his parka pocket
  • Found 1 year later with the help of a cheapo metal detector.

Other than the mounts losing all their bluing, scope was found intact, still uses it on the original rifle. I took the time to write a letter to Leupold, they responded with an offer for a free catalog...

My dad and I were hunting grouse in Ontario a few years ago when he needed to answer the call of nature. After helping him find a suitable tree to lean against, I left him to his business. 6 grouse flushed about 20 feet from where he parked his ass, but we had to wait for him to finish. While chasing the grouse in the area we saw them go, we came across a pile of rocks about 4 feet high with a hole in the middle and a toilet seat sitting on top. This was not even 30 feet from where he had used a tree. I've never laughed so hard in my life!!

last weekend I found 5 old pails, a broiler, some chain, some cable, parts from an old dozer or dragline, I think, and I carried out a headlight from what appears to be a '30s or '40 Cadillac. Looks like its made of copper, some brass and stainless steel or a really good crome job as there is not a lot of rust

Well I (Brother, Dad and Myself) found a crashed airplane in the middle of nowhere while elk hunting, some long unused traps, an old outboard motor in the middle of nowhere dropped long before the nearest road was there.

My brother found a old mag light that still worked when he put fresh batteries in it.

I found the remains of a crashed chopper.

I still want to find an old gun.

When I was a kid about 40 years ago my father found some indian arrow heads and a hammer head while out hunting on some land we had recently purchased. We went back later to the same general area and were able to find about four pemmican pouches still in one piece. You could clearly see the leather pouch and how it appeared to have a draw string at the top. I would say they were about the size of a large orange or maybe a bit larger. Unfortunatly we didn't do anything with them and they got lost over the years.

Your finding old crashed aircraft in the bush is quite spectacular. However, "finding" them, means you were the first to discover the lost craft. Was this what happened?
Or, did you just revisit the remains of where a craft had crashed and recovery had been made?
There are a considerable number of lost aircraft that have never been found, especially in BC. Coming across any of these would be quite an event.

And what kind of plane was it? If it was a Messerschmit ME109 ,that would be interesting. There is a Nazi weather station at the war museum in Ottawa. It was discovered alond the coast of NFLD in the 80's. Apparantly at some point in WW2, Germans arrived and set this station up for their UBoats. It has Canada painted on it for disguise.

Sweet.

Now if you were to find a plane would you mark it on your GPS and write down its registration number and follow up on it?

Found this one on my Daughter's baby shower day while hiking a hill after a Muley. Never got the buck you you can imagine I was alright with that.

I found(new to me) some kind of big metal thing, maybe an old potato excavator, with a half ton truck on top of it. This was today.
